The Lakeland Union High School girls' volleyball team began practice Aug. 13, and third year head coach Carley Punzel feels the team will be strong all around.

"(The team is) a bit smaller this year, but we are excited because then each girl will get more playing time, therefore building our program as a whole," Punzel said.

The girls are working on connecting as a team, Punzel said.

"Each year we do a team bonding the day after we announce teams," she said. "They must complete challenges together. It's a lot of fun and we feel the girls enjoy it, too."

This year, Punzel said she will have to move things around position-wise and these first two weeks of gameplay will see what works best for the team.

"A lot of my girls improved over the summer and have shown me they can perform multiple positions, which is exciting," Punzel said.

Their first Great Northern Conference match is on Thursday, Sept. 6 against Tomahawk at LUHS.
