Three Lakeland area BMX racers took home first place earlier this month at the Wisconsin State Championship last month at Winnebagoland BMX in Oshkosh.
Matthew Schettino and McKaelyenn Schettino, both of Minocqua, and Jackson Wergin of Lake Tomahawk, won state championships in their respective age and skill divisions.
The riders represented the Hodag BMX Club out of Rhinelander, which had five state champions overall.
Wergin was the state champion in the 6 Intermediate division, Matthew Schettino took first place in the 6 Expert class and McKaelynn Schettino won the 11 Girls Expert class.
Additionally, James Wergin finished second in the 8 Expert class, Matson Schettino was fourth in the 8 Intermediate class and Michael Schettino was fifth in the 10 Expert class.
All six Lakeland-area riders earned state placement plates that they can proudly display on their bikes in future races.
To be eligible, riders had to compete in three of seven state qualifier events held throughout the 2018 season. The Hodag BMX track held a state qualifier race in late July.
The Hodag BMX track is located in Rhinelander’s West Side Park and holds weekly BMX races from May-September. More information can be found on the Hodag BMX Club’s website,
