Sally Kunkel, 71, of Lac du Flambeau went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 24, 2020. Sally was born on Aug. 28, 1948, in Milwaukee, to Francis and Alberta Almekinder. She married her loving husband John on June 3, 1972. Sally worked for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minneapolis until her retirement in 2005. Upon her retirement, Sally and her husband moved to their dream lake home in Lac du Flambeau.

Sally fought a long and tough fight against breast cancer. Initially diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer in 2012, Sally never gave up and continually defied the odds. She fought until the end, always optimistic that she would win her battle and amazing everyone around her with her resolve, attitude and most importantly her faith.

Sally was active in the community. She was a talented organist, displaying her talents as an organist at Trinity Lutheran Church. She also volunteered her time leading small group church discussions, assisting local arts organizations, and helping her lake association preserve the sparkling waters of the Northwoods.

She cherished her family and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren grow up loving the Lakeland area. She enjoyed a number of hobbies, including gardening. Sally was always on the lookout to see what critters would scamper across the lawn, but could never quite find a solution to the squirrels chewing through her Christmas lights in the trees.

Sally is preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Alberta Almekinder. She is survived by her loving husband John of 48 years and her two children Brian (Heather) Kunkel, of Woodbury, Minn.; and Cheryl (Charlie) Seidl of Hudson. She has five grandchildren, Jackson Kunkel, Megan Kunkel, Stella Schuetz, Benjamin Seidl, and Samuel Seidl. She will be deeply missed by both friends and family.

Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Minocqua on Friday, Jan. 31. Visitation will begin at 10 with a service to follow at 11 a.m. A light lunch will be served after the service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made in Sally’s name to Trinity Lutheran Church 8781 Brunswick Road Minocqua, WI 54548 (715-356-2255).
