It’s that time of year and though there isn’t (as of Tuesday) snow on the ground in the Minocqua and Woodruff area, winter parking ordinances took effect Nov 1.

“Basically, Nov. 1 through April 15 the winter parking ordinance takes effect in the town of Minocqua,” Andrew Gee, Minocqua’s police chief, said. “Cars are prohibited from parking overnight on any of the town streets.”

Gee said that traditionally, overnight parking in downtown Minocqua is not a problem, with the exception of the November to April time frame.

“You really can’t park anywhere on the Island between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. to accommodate snow removal equipment,” he said.

The exception to that, he said, is parking lots B and C near the post office, which allow alternate parking.

“On odd nights you can park in one lot and on even nights you can park in the other lot,” he said. “Those lots are marked where you can park between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.”

Violators receive warning citations because, Gee said, he doesn’t want to give people the impression that just because there’s no snow it’s OK to park down there.

“We essentially issue warning citations up until we get word there’s going to be a big snowfall that’s going to require the town crews to be out to remove snow,” he said.

Gee said the Minocqua Police Department hasn’t issued any citations yet this year as a courtesy.

“We accommodate the people that regularly park downtown or someone who’s living downtown and is new to the area and maybe hasn’t seen the signs that are posted in town, telling you where you can park in the winter,” he said. “We do issue a few warning citations to get everybody on the same page.”

He wanted to make it clear, though, that this approach shouldn’t be taken by people as a “pass” to be able to park in downtown Minocqua between Nov. 1 and April 15.

In Woodruff, the restrictions for overnight parking on city streets are much the same, including the Nov. 1 to April 15 timeframe.

However, unlike Minocqua, the Woodruff Police Department has begun to issue citations for overnight parking on the street after Nov. 1.

Police department administrator Lori Janusz said there have been some complaints because of it.

“There are signs posted that have the dates and times on them,” she said.
