The good ...
By considering the possibility of trimming the number of Oneida County supervisors, as well as compensation to them for per diems, the county board may have something in hand that could save taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars. Price County made a similar move a few years back and it doesn't seem to have caused problems there. The board tabled the resolution at Tuesday's meeting but will take the matter up again in January. We feel that if redistricting can be done equitably, it could be a good thing. If areas such as Minocqua, Arbor Vitae and Woodruff are left with fewer representatives, then we may have to reconsider. However, on the surface, it seems like a worthy effort to this point.
The bad ...
News earlier this week that the economy has forced many to homeless shelters here in the state is not good. With winter arriving, more than likely the numbers will only increase. Here in the Lakeland area, we know that there are many who have been hard-hit by the recession and for those who can give, we hope you will. Be it by throwing a few nickels into the Salvation Army's Red Kettle or donating to the food pantry and the Lakeland Sharing Foundation, among others - it only helps to make life a little better for friends and neighbors.
The ugly ...
Clean campaigns - that's something of an oxymoron to us, but regardless, the "clean elections tour" continues with a series of informational hearings being conducted by the State Assembly Committee on Elections and Campaign Reform. While these hearings will allow public comment, to us they need look no further than the 7th Congressional District and the GOP's continuing efforts to blackball candidate Daniel Mielke. The previously released "Clean Campaign Ultimatum" is no more than window dressing on the party bigwigs' efforts to endorse their candidate of choice, Sean Duffy, to run against Congressman Dave Obey. For shame.

I too favor the reduction of the county board. However, your statement that you may have to reconsider if the Lakeland area is left with fewer representatives does not make sense. The Lakeland area currently has six representatives from the townships of Minocqua, Woodruff, and Hazelhurst. I did not include Arbor Vitae. A little more research on your part might have shown you that Arbor Vitae is in Vilas County. If you get your wish and keep all 6, that leaves 7 other positions to be split between the remaining 17 townships and the City of Rhinelander! I'm sorry, but to change to 13 members, the Lakeland area is going to have to bite the bullet too.
