Our View: Dismantling alarmism

In general, the journalists of the state-run media aren’t too smart. That goes without saying. That’s why they end up as talking heads for establishment broadcast outlets, or as pen-pushing propagandists for government bureaucracies.

Candidates, voters: Job well done

The spring elections have come and gone, and, from our perspective, it’s time to say to everyone: Thank you for a job well done.

The falsity of false balance

Whenever my mother used to really like something, I mean really like something, she would talk about it incessantly and give it her favorite stamp of approval. (Subscriber access)

Time to investigate the investigation

The death of a woman in Presque Isle in early January has attracted a lot of attention and stirred even more emotion. The late-night or early-morning death of Corrine Gerster as she attempted to take a neighbor’s dog home was, at the most basic level, a human tragedy.

Taxpayers should attend special county board meeting

As the story in today’s edition indicates, the Oneida County Board of Supervisors could hold a special meeting as soon as Monday afternoon to discuss proposals to either renovate the county’s highway department or build a new facility altogether.

Accountability matters in natural resource legislation

A provision of Governor Walker’s budget that’s received quite a bit of discussion has been the suggestion to make the Natural Resource Board an advisory board. Many people have advocated that we maintain the status quo, and continue to allow the unelected board to have policy-making authority.

Political smear of Billy Fried unwarranted

We see it all the time when there is a state or national election: Rather than merely disagreeing with a person’s politics and policies, one side accuses the other side of dishonesty and ethical lapses, or having some personality disorder or character flaw. (Subscriber access)

County needs to slow down decision on highway department

Government generally moves at a snail’s pace when it comes to providing services to citizens — ever try to get a building permit? — but just let the opportunity to spend more tax dollars arise and suddenly the bureaucratic pulse quickens and the race is on to spend and spend again. A time of extraordinary danger

Last year during Sunshine Week – a week celebrating openness in government – we changed the way we did things on our annual report card: We listed first those who earned failing grades in the arena of transparency and then worked our way down to the better grades.

Let the sun shine on phony documents

As is obvious, The Lakeland Times welcomes Sen. Tom Tiffany’s willingness — as we report in this edition — to address what this newspaper sees as perhaps the year’s top open-records issue: the court-approved ability of government officials to populate the state’s official record with phony documents. We must be vigilant, and ready

It’s welcome news that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is backing off its proposal to ban “green tip” M855 ammunition for one of America’s most popular hunting rifles, the AR15, but there are some very important lessons to take away from this picture. (Subscriber access)

Our View: Bad actors close down the play

As we report today, Gogebic Taconite suddenly closed down its mining operation in northern Wisconsin last week and headed for the hills. The company announced it won’t develop its proposed $1.5-billion iron ore mine after all, and, quite frankly, no one should hold their breath that there will ever be a second act. With the budget, the president calls the shots

It may not be obvious from the news coverage, but a good bit of Congress’s 2015 agenda just landed on Capitol Hill with a thud. I mean this literally. The federal budget that President Obama recently submitted runs to 2,000 pages.
