Our View: The case of the missing sheriff

A missing child is one of the worst ordeals a family can endure, and its stresses and pressures tremor through a community, too, not merely for those who know the family and the child but for everybody concerned about the well-being of a community’s members.

Dam dust-up: Prelude to an election?

The issue of a political bulk mailing in the 2014 Oneida County board spring elections is still simmering in political circles, and this year it has even taken on state overtones, primarily because state Sen. Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) is smack dab in the middle of the mix. (Subscriber access)

Our View: Life isn't fair? Give the good-ol'-boys a break!

Life isn’t fair.

Or, as one blogger put it, life is like a good-ol’-boys club.

The NRB: Not what democracy looks like

Environmentalists and liberals love to spout off about preserving “the people’s voice” and protecting our state’s cherished democratic traditions from corrupt special interests.

Is Mexico safe?

After more than a decade of involvement in the border issues I’m often asked if it’s safe to travel or vacation in Mexico. My opinion is a definite NO!

Our View: Dismantling alarmism

In general, the journalists of the state-run media aren’t too smart. That goes without saying. That’s why they end up as talking heads for establishment broadcast outlets, or as pen-pushing propagandists for government bureaucracies.

The falsity of false balance

Whenever my mother used to really like something, I mean really like something, she would talk about it incessantly and give it her favorite stamp of approval. (Subscriber access)

Time to investigate the investigation

The death of a woman in Presque Isle in early January has attracted a lot of attention and stirred even more emotion. The late-night or early-morning death of Corrine Gerster as she attempted to take a neighbor’s dog home was, at the most basic level, a human tragedy.

Taxpayers should attend special county board meeting

As the story in today’s edition indicates, the Oneida County Board of Supervisors could hold a special meeting as soon as Monday afternoon to discuss proposals to either renovate the county’s highway department or build a new facility altogether.

Accountability matters in natural resource legislation

A provision of Governor Walker’s budget that’s received quite a bit of discussion has been the suggestion to make the Natural Resource Board an advisory board. Many people have advocated that we maintain the status quo, and continue to allow the unelected board to have policy-making authority.

Political smear of Billy Fried unwarranted

We see it all the time when there is a state or national election: Rather than merely disagreeing with a person’s politics and policies, one side accuses the other side of dishonesty and ethical lapses, or having some personality disorder or character flaw. (Subscriber access)

County needs to slow down decision on highway department

Government generally moves at a snail’s pace when it comes to providing services to citizens — ever try to get a building permit? — but just let the opportunity to spend more tax dollars arise and suddenly the bureaucratic pulse quickens and the race is on to spend and spend again. Connecting the globalist dots inside the DOT
At first it sounds ludicrous, a new proposal by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to hire 180 full-time additional engineers in an age of shrinking Wisconsin state government. And, you know what? It is.

No more tax increases: Why Grover Norquist is right
There was quite a dust-up in the Republican Party this past week when Georgia U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss uttered the unthinkable and said he would no longer adhere to the famous Taxpayer Protection Pledge conceived by Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

LUHS school board needs to ask the tough questions
What is happening these days at Lakeland Union High School is nothing short of sad – a series of questionable actions that the administration has failed to explain adequately to the public and which demand answers before the community can move forward.

What now, conservatives? Relax, we're winning the war
Not too long ago I wrote a column about how dynamic and vigorous the conservative movement in this country was and how quickly it was morphing into the most potent American political force of the young century.
