Our View: County should stop enforcing illegal zoning ordinance
The ink was barely dry on the budget bill signed by Gov. Scott Walker before the bureaucrats, both on the state and local levels, were busy trying to figure out ways to undermine the shoreland provisions within it.

Our View: The referendum must stand

If the resolution that will be presented to the Oneida County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday passes as it stands, it will represent a sensible step forward for a highway department plan that has all too often seemed to be on a fast track for approval.

Beginning and ending with a yes

Yes. Fifteen years ago — May 8, 2000, to be exact — I entered The Lakeland Times feeling a bit uncertain about the new job I had accepted after 10 years as editor of THE-BEE in Phillips.

We demand to know

The Republican leadership just keeps doing it to themselves.

The dog didn't do it

As we have been reporting, there’s a lot of questions surrounding the post-mortem depredation of a 61-year-old woman in Presque Isle this year.

Our View: The Wisconsin Republican Party: Corruption, cronyism, and sleaze

The Thursday night, pre-holiday attempt to eviscerate the state’s open records laws is a political calamity for the Republicans — there’s no way this outrage won’t damage the GOP brand — and the about-face by Gov. Scott Walker and legislative leaders Saturday afternoon, when they killed the provisions, isn’t going to bail them out.

Our View: The Wisconsin Republican Party: Corruption, cronyism, and sleaze

As it stands, the Thursday night, pre-holiday attempt to eviscerate the state’s open records laws is a political calamity for the Republicans — there’s no way this outrage won’t damage the GOP brand — but unless it’s pulled from the budget it will become a policy travesty that will do far more harm to the very foundation of democracy.

Our View: So who is running the asylum?

There’s an old politically incorrect saying about lunatics and inmates running the asylum, and these days we have to wonder if that is exactly what is going on at the state Department of Natural Resources.

Our Flag's walk through history
What caused me that day to lift my gaze will always puzzle me. But there it was, fluttering high atop a pole in the early morning sun.

Our View: Time to quit coddling the highway department

Time is flying by, and Oneida County has yet to schedule a full-throated public meeting for its proposed highway department project — either a new Taj Mahal or a renovated department at its present location. (Subscriber access)

No more wishy washy: It's time to reallocate Electoral College
In a recent interview, Gov. Scott Walker said he would be open to changing the way Wisconsin’s Electoral College votes are allocated.

Connecting the globalist dots inside the DOT
At first it sounds ludicrous, a new proposal by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to hire 180 full-time additional engineers in an age of shrinking Wisconsin state government. And, you know what? It is.

No more tax increases: Why Grover Norquist is right
There was quite a dust-up in the Republican Party this past week when Georgia U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss uttered the unthinkable and said he would no longer adhere to the famous Taxpayer Protection Pledge conceived by Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

I have never had a bad day hunting
After decades of deer hunting in Wisconsin – hunting in every condition from sunshine to snow – I can say I have never had a bad day hunting. Each hunt is unique, special and memorable.

LUHS school board needs to ask the tough questions
What is happening these days at Lakeland Union High School is nothing short of sad – a series of questionable actions that the administration has failed to explain adequately to the public and which demand answers before the community can move forward.

What now, conservatives? Relax, we're winning the war
Not too long ago I wrote a column about how dynamic and vigorous the conservative movement in this country was and how quickly it was morphing into the most potent American political force of the young century.

U.S.-China cultural exchanges - why does China get a pass?
I know it’s the election season, but sometimes other things are important too. In looking through the latest Lakeland Union High School District parent newsletter, I was struck by a small item announcing that “[T]he third annual Daqing, China, teacher/student exchange to Beijing will occur Oct. 23-Nov. 5.”

Driving the future: Legislation gives teens a voice in safety programming
I am a teenager. I stay up too late; I wake up too late. I get emotional. I don’t want my parents circling me like hawks, and I definitely don’t want them to try to tell me what to do, especially behind the wheel. However, now that students have fallen back into the school routine, it’s time for everyone to pay attention to teen safety on the road.

The issue now is not basketball; it's integrity and transparency
Once again, this newspaper is being forced by recalcitrant public officials to fight legally for open records, and, as it has been in the past, the fight is with a Lakeland Union High School administration that doesn’t think twice about thumbing its nose at the law.
