To the Editor:
Once upon a time, there was a quaint little “Island City” called Minocqua in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Residents and visitors to the Island and surrounding pastoral communities, including Hazelhurst and Woodruff, still love the clean, clear lakes, the woods, and the wildlife here.
However, over the years we have all acquiesced in the construction of more and more pavement, wider roads and bridges, and larger parking lots.
More such construction along U.S. Highway 51 is no idle threat to the lakes, forests, and wildlife. By now, you know that it is scheduled to begin in 2013.
The lakes, forests, and wildlife cannot withstand more pavement and highway pollution. We cannot restore or redeem what we ruin in nature.
So please voice your objections to this impending travesty. Sign the Stop Look & Listen petition (available at local businesses) and write to legislators and administrators now, before it is too late.
The moral of this story is: “If you find yourself in a deep hole, stop digging.”
