To the Editor:
I am writing to report on the success of the Stop, Look and Listen Committee’s petition and letter-writing campaign.
I am happy to report that due to the work of many people, the willingness of about 50 area stores, gas stations and businesses, all of the emails, letters and telephone calls, and over 1,700 signatures on our petition, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) has agreed to put the expansion of U.S. Highway 51 North from a mile or so south of County Highway Y to Oneida Street in Hazelhurst on hold for one year.
Secretary Mark Gottleib has agreed to reconsider the need for a four-lane highway on this section of Highway 51. A citizen’s advisory committee has been appointed to study this issue.
We will also have representation from the Department of Natural Resources, which has environmental concerns about the proposed expansion. We are particularly thankful to Save More in Minocqu--a, for allowing the Stop, Look and Listen Committee two weekends (including Labor Day weekend) to staff tables for petition signatures.
Please write or call the following and thank them for their willingness to listen to the people. I will keep reporting on our progress over the next year.
