To the Editor:
Friday’s article in The Lakeland Times regarding easements on the snowmobile trail on Squirrel Lake road missed the mark. Contrary to what was reported, we have cooperated with the Forest Riders Snowmobile Club and have continued to grant easements on Scotchman Lake Road to increase safety.
We would like to illuminate the great benefits that silent sports bring to the Lakeland area. In 2011, we donated the largest conservation easement ever in the state of Wisconsin to preserve a jewel of the Northwoods, the Minocqua Winter Park.
Last year more than 15,000 skiers, snowshoers and tubers visited the park. It continues to attract people from all over the Midwest and the world who spend their money in the Lakeland area, at restaurants, hotels and stores.
Silent sports enthusiasts also enjoy paddling our lakes and walking our forests after the snow melts. It is a four-season attraction that draws many tourists to our area.
The community appreciates the 30 years of support that the Town of Minocqua has given to Winter Park. Let’s continue to support cross country skiing, hiking, walking and paddling as well and welcome everyone to the Lakeland area.
