To the Editor:
Locals know that I’m a confirmed Republican, but the mining issue is hot up here right now, and as a Republican I feel Gov. Scott Walker and our representative, Sen. Tom Tiffany, are moving too fast on the project up in Iron and Ashland counties.
I’m not against mining because in politics I do not believe in absolutes – those only limit possibilities – but we have something else we need to consider.
The most precious natural resource we have in this area is our fresh water. Without that we are nothing. I would love it if we would be able to create more jobs in northern Wisconsin, but at what cost? We need to consider mining as an option, but we also have to look at the company’s environmental records, its engineering plans and its environmental history.
I don’t like it when liberals make knee-jerk decisions and make no real solutions to the real problem of gun control, but this is also a knee-jerk decision, in my opinion.
They are cracking down on the citizens and not the criminals. They need to slow up and look at the record and the plans but they also need to only consider to allow it if they are responsible.
