To the Editor:
On Wednesday, April 2, we were walking our dogs north on Stearns Lake Road and came across a dead animal off of the side of the road. As we got closer, we saw that it was a fairly large, tan dog. There was extensive blood spattered on the snow. From footsteps in the snow near the dog, it was apparent that the dog was deliberately shot in the chest at close range with a high caliber gun.
To say the least, we found this to be very disturbing. When we got home, we called the Town of Lac du Flambeau. They understood our anger and were very considerate of our feelings. We appreciated their concern and care regarding this inhumane act.
To shoot your dog and leave it there to die in plain view alongside the road is disgusting. It is likely pointless to appeal to the conscious of the mean-spirited individual who did this. Regardless of the circumstances that prompted this act, there is no excuse for the lake of respect and compassion shown for a pet that looked to its owner for its care.
