To the Editor:
My husband and I just spent a wonderful week in Vilas County, and I want to congratulate state and county planners for the excellent work you’ve done in making this an outdoor paradise.
We’re from Milwaukee, and we spent time visiting our son and volunteering at Camp Manito-wish YMCA, then staying with a friend on Ballard Lake. Even though the weather was cold, we enjoyed biking the completed trail, seeing the exhibits at the Boulder Junction Museum, buying treasures at two flea markets, finding new discoveries including the Green Rich Tea Company in St. Germain, and eating and drinking at several area restaurants. As we watched the loons and eagles on the lake, we marveled at the natural paradise you’ve nurtured in this beautiful spot.
When our friends – who have had family in the area since 1898 – told us that there was a possibility that the county might allow ATV traffic, we were astonished. When you have something as unique as what Vilas County offers, why would you disrupt the quiet – and a successful brand? I highly discourage you from moving in that direction and instead encourage you to continue to promote the beauty and tranquility of the area. I know we will be sharing our stories on Facebook, and I hope others will do the same.
