Kudos to The Times
To the Editor:

During the summer months area musicians perform concerts every Thursday evening at Torpy Park in Minocqua. We are always looking at ways to get the word out to the general public about who, what, where, and when these concerts are happening.

Our Capitalist way of life is working against us
To the Editor:

When it started the idea was to improve and enhance the everyday life of Americans. Innovation was combined with quality made products to make life easier.

'For the greater good'
To the Editor:

Why does Marshfield clinic so desperately want to build a second hospital only minutes from an already existing one, to be a fifth hospital in an area that already has four hospitals within 30 to 90 min distance of each other?

Adoption of a Plum Lake District will disenfranchise the majority of taxpayers
To the Editor:

I was recently told by a Plum Lake Town Board member that the formation of a Plum Lake District would be "the most democratic and fair form of government" to all of the property owners involved. He also advised me to "just let the district happen," and that the majority can always vote it out at the first annual meeting.

'Insane decision'
To the Editor:

This overdue letter was prompted by the insane decision made recently by a panel of judges in Washington D.C. to keep the gray wolf protected in northern Wisconsin. These judges, who have obviously been corrupted by money from the Humane Society of the U.S., PETA, and Friends of Animals, etc., probably wouldn't know the difference between a parakeet and a pair of shoes.

Kocovsky's Garden of Evil
To the Editor:

The author of the letter to the editor titled "Response to Meinert" has hit a new low for tasteless comments regarding Gary Meinert's work along the Arizona border where he observes, photographs, and reports his findings to the border patrol.

Jobs and the environment
To the Editor:

Governor Walker has proposed a fast track bill that hands unprecedented autonomy to a Chinese corporation over the waters of Wisconsin. Foxconn of Taiwan proposes to build a facility bigger than 11 football stadiums to produce liquid-crystal display panels in our state. What little is known about the corporation's environmental record is not encouraging.

My faith calls on me to stand with immigrant youth
To the Editor:

For the earliest days of my religious education as a Catholic and formation as a Holy Cross Sister, my faith has taught and called me to welcome the stranger, stand with the vulnerable and love my neighbor.

Response to John Kocovsky's prevarications
To the Editor:

This is in reply to Mr. Kocovsky's repetitive diatribe for which he's so well known. None, not one of his charges relating to my 18 years working tangentially with the Border Patrol, are accurate now or in the past.

Thank you
To the Editor:

Tuesday, Aug. 1, the Winchester Women's Social Club held a successful blood drive. Thank you to all the donors who gave a life saving gift and to the workers who volunteered their time.

Thanks
To the Editor:

We have been honored to be a part of the Rotary Youth Exchange program this past school year hosting Kim Kimura from Tokyo, Japan.

Fishing and Life
To the Editor:

In "Shawshank Redemption," Andy Dufresne (in letter to Red) says, "Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies!"

Response to Meinert
To the Editor:

I'd like the opportunity to respond to Mr. Meinert's recent letter to the editor which was overflowing with self-serving allegations and assertions, as well as his usual braggadocio.

Thank you
To the Editor:

The family of Debra E. Peterson "Bubba" (Dec. 6, 1954-July 10, 2017) would like to say "Chi Miigwich" (much gratitude) for everyone that sent flowers and cards, provided prayers and good thoughts, attended services (especially those that traveled a long way), and visited and shared stories about our Debra.

Thank you
To the Editor:

The Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce extends a sincere appreciation to the Town of Presque Isle and the State of Wisconsin's Tourism Department for their financial support of Presque Isle Days, held the last weekend of June.

Wisconsin's transportation budget
To the Editor:

Wisconsin's transportation budget is facing a $1 billion dollar deficit. The latest irresponsible budget plan by the Republicans in the Senate is to borrow $712 million with $350 million coming out of the general fund which goes to pay for schools, universities, public safety, and health programs. The budget was to be completed by July 1.

National health insurance
To the Editor:

In the wake of repeated Republican failures to "Repeal and Replace" Obamacare, it is time to finally get serious about the next step in the evolution of health care reform in this country.

Job well done
To the Editor:

As my wife and I return from another bike ride on the many miles of trails in the Northwoods, we would like to say thank you to the organizations, individuals, businesses, etc., responsible for these bike trails.

Biggest issue is safety!
To the Editor:

I am responding to your Lakeland Times/Our View article Time to deep-six misinformation about Carlin Club.

Friday, July 21, 2017

Thank you
To the Editor:

Thank you for the wonderful people who came to donate the gift of life at the Mercer Community Blood Drive, sponsored by the Mercer Lioness Club, held (earlier this month).

Democrats and Republicans unite
To the Editor:

Democrats are united in their belief that health care is a basic human right. Americans should not die because they can't afford insurance.

Barnhill, you remain wrong
To the Editor:

David Barnhill, climate alarmist and propagandist, is back (The Lakeland Times, June 30, 2017).

Reader responds to Gullan letter
To the Editor:

A recent letter by Mr. Gullan listed a litany of points he apparently believes show that the Democrats are having a bad month. In checking just a few of his claims you find, as usual, they don't paint a complete picture:

'What a hypocrite'
To the Editor:

Wisconsin's gem, the wild and scenic St. Croix River, is under attack by Sen. Sheila Harsdorf and Rep. Adam Jarchow. They have introduced legislation that erodes river protections that have stood us in good stead for 50 years. Why?

Thank you Tony Chambers
To the Editor:

Tony Chambers' letter on the red tape and layers of bureaucracy within the DNR is spot on. Like Tony was with bobcat, I was getting impatient on otter. The state knew they had issues and those issues were negatively impacting the resource.

Kindness during a trying time
To the Editor:

My mother, Verna Kohler Bloom, is a resident at Sunny Side Care Center in Lake Park, Minn. My mother is 107 years of age, born March 22, 1910.

Born in Becker County in Minnesota, a farming area and had eight brothers and sisters.

A message to my readers
To the Editor:

For nearly 14 years I've attempted to be an information conduit between the U.S. Border Patrol and you my fellow Northwoods citizens. Without my years of involvement with the agency I would not have gathered the knowledge and confidence to write and speak on this important subject. Equally important, however, is my dedication to the agency by writing and speaking only factual and honest statements.

Property taxes due
To the Editor:

The second installment of the 2016 Oneida and Vilas County property tax bills is due by July 31. Due to limited parking and long waiting lines, mailing tax payments is recommended for both counties.

'It did not surprise me'
To the Editor:

Health care for a country's citizens is a right and a given. All industrialized nations in the world long ago recognized the need and adopted it. Health care plans in other nations provide for fully-paid medical and hospitalization costs by a single payer (government) and include elder care, along with disability pensions.

Not a good month
To the Editor:

It hasn't been a good month for the Socialist Democrats and their Liberal "fake news" media.

When did civility become optional?
To the Editor:

Having been a 20-year part time resident of the area, and active in our lakes association, I found it necessary to attend several Minocqua and Lac du Flambeau town meetings this past winter and spring.

Voting rights and privacy
To the Editor:

The integrity of our elections, our voting rights, and citizen privacy are values we cherish, but can't be taken for granted. The Election "Integrity" Commission is asking states for the names, addresses, party affiliations, voting histories, military service, felony convictions, and the last four digits of Social Security numbers for all voters. Due July 14.

Lincoln Reagan picnic at Kula Ranch
To the Editor:

The Vilas County Republicans hosted a Lincoln Reagan picnic on June 25 at the Kula Ranch, home to Butch and Kim Simac. Despite the rain, we stayed dry in the big tent and about 70 people heard our guest speakers explain actual experiences that continue to massively mold their lives today.

"Policing disasters" and other German folk tales
To the Editor:

I seem to have captured the attention of the Cheeseheads-abroad crowd based on Ben Giese's letter charging me with "Misinterpretation of the German psyche" (June 23) in my response, "About that German health care bonanza...," (June 16) to Kristy Lutz's paean to the German Way: "Having babies in Germany: cheaper and better care" (May 26).

The dangers of Lincoln Hills
To the Editor:

The decision recently rendered by U.S. District Judge Peterson, like other decisions concerning Lincoln Hills/Copper Lake School, was made in ignorance. I would be interested to know if the judge ever set foot in LHS/CLS. The judge knows nothing of the conditions at LHS/CLS. I worked there for 20 years.

Gregg Walker and Richard Moore continue their ACA nonsense
To the Editor:

Your recent reflections (June 16) related to the ACA commands a strong rebuttal. It was a repulsive, smug, laughable analysis of the "repeal and replace" travesty that is more aptly titled as wealth redistribution to the wealthy. Let me pose a few questions:

The DNR just beat Tom Tiffany
To the Editor:

More middle managers and red tape coming.

Six weeks ago, I wrote a letter that implored the joint finance committee to help both the DNR and the hunting public by reducing the red tape and excessive layers of supervision. I gave an example of how it took over two and a half years for a bobcat experiment idea to work through the layers of bureaucracy in a top heavy and bloated agency.

'Cripple the DNR'
To the Editor:

As the Wisconsin State Journal reported on June 18, the Republicans are at it again in their ongoing quest to cripple the Department of Natural Resources.

My 102-year-old father recently visited the emergency room of Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff, and was then admitted for end of life care.
