Losing democracy and the power of the people
To the Editor:

It's going the way of the frog in the pot of slowly increasing heated water.

They say if you throw a frog in a pot of very hot water it will immediately jump out. But if you put it in a pot of water and slowly turn up the temperature, it will stay in the pot until it boils to death.

'A slap in the face'
To the Editor:

Enough already! What exactly is happening in this country?

A movement I find very disturbing is this latest NFL protest by some athletes and teams to kneel before or during the National Anthem and protest our flag.

Can't get an answer
To the Editor:

In trying to keep an open mind to the new mining bill proposal, and wanting to give its proponents a fair shake, I requested some basic information from Senator Tiffany on sulfide mines.

Response to Jopek column
To the Editor:

As a veteran of the Vietnam War where I spent one year in the Delta, bordered on one side by Cambodia and on another side by the Mekong River, I take exception to the comments by Mr. Jopek in the September edition of The Lakeland Times regarding the dishonoring on the National Anthem and the Flag of the United States of America by the NFL.

'Zombie Trump-care'
To the Editor:

The current iteration of the AHCA bill (aka zombie Trump-care), introduced last week by Sens. Lindsey Graham, Bill Cassidy, Dean Heller, and our own Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) was endorsed by this paper in an "Our View" editorial, although with a caveat, saying "the bill isn't perfect."

'A moral obligation'
To the Editor:

"As greenhouse gas emissions increase, sea levels are rising, average global temperatures are increasing, and severe weather patterns are accelerating. These changes, coupled with other global dynamics, ...will devastate homes, land and infrastructure." - 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review, U.S. Department of Defense.

'Lyin' Tom'
To the Editor:

Lyin' Tom's at it again.

At 9 a.m. on the 7th of September, a hearing was held in Ladysmith, Wisconsin on the proposal to repeal the "prove it first" Sulfide Mining Moratorium law.

Beautiful flowers
To the Editor:

I would like to give a big round of applause and my appreciation to all those who plant, water and maintain all of the planters, flower beds and hanging baskets of beautiful flowers along Hwy 51 in Minocqua.

Colorama Dinner a success
To the Editor:

The Boulder Junction Community Foundation hosted the 58th annual Colorama Dinner on Saturday, Sept. 23. The Foundation would like to thank Anne Derber, Grant Herman and the Camp Manito-wish YMCA board for allowing the event to take place in such an historic building in Boulder Junction and for providing help and equipment to make this event possible.

Graham-Cassidy targets Americans with pre-existing conditions
To the Editor:

As I write this article, Republicans are one vote away from passage of Graham-Cassidy, legislation which would rescind the Affordable Care Act. By the time you read this article, you will know whether they succeeded in putting health care out of the reach of millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions.

Support for bike trail expansion
To the Editor:

The story in the Sept. 22 edition of The Lakeland Times indicated that the Vilas County Highway Committee heard arguments in support of and against a proposed expansion of the paved bike trail in Manitowish Waters.

Reader responds to Strid letter
To the Editor:

Recently a letter from Craig Strid was published expressing concern about emissions, especially mercury, being emitted in the mining process. For those like Mr Strid who are interested, I recommend they read a research paper published by NOAA about mercury deposition in Lake Superior.

It's the catch, not the kill
To the Editor:

I have spent a lot of enjoyable time on the waters of Wisconsin, Ontario, and Manitoba pursuing Northern pike and musky. It has been a long time since I kept a musky.

'Do the same'
To the Editor:

One of the best parts of being a rural Wisconsin family physician the past three years is that I've only come across four of my patients that didn't have health insurance!

The winds of change continue to stir in Boulder Junction
To the Editor:

Thank you for the wonderful town support that the townspeople showed at the Sept. 12 meeting of the electors. Understandably, we all have varied opinions and knowledge levels about town government, we all share this town and call it home.

Lakeland Union High School Student Council sponsored a "Pink Out" event on Sept. 15 to raise awareness and support for breast cancer in the community.

Where's the movie theater schedule?

Debate
To the Editor:

When is a debate not a debate? This apparent paradox is particularly relevant to discussions of climate change. E.P.A. administrator Scott Pruitt, for instance, is planning a "debate" about the science of global warming.

'A huge thumb on the scale for big business'
To the Editor:

What an interesting time we live in. One of our major political parties carries the banner for "small government" and runs from the "S" word like a zombie from a cross in an old horror movie.

The cost of health care and other discontents
To the Editor:

While health care is not completely socialized, it is completely industrialized.

Health care now accounts for about 20 percent of America's Gross Domestic Product, or about $3 trillion annually (equivalent to the GDP of France).

'We're waiting'
To the Editor:

I do my best to avoid food fights with other letter writers on these pages. My preference is to use evidence and argument to engage those with whom I disagree - ideally with "opponents" who take a similar approach to debate.

Bashing the bill
To the Editor:

I would like to comment on Dave Noel's letter in the Sept. 12 Lakeland Times, "What the Heck is Sulfide Mining and why is Tiffany's New Mining Law Bad for Northern Wisconsin?"

'Preserve our clean waters'
To the Editor:

June of 1996 I attended an informational meeting about the possibility of a sulfide mine near Crandon. I knew nothing about sulfide mining, but through the years I had gotten the feeling that mining companies left a mess when they were done.

The 'Red Pill'
To the Editor:

Originally this started out as an article about six political parties. That is where I will start. Currently there are six political parties in our country. Most have blurred lines between as politicians seem to have a hard time telling the truth even about the political party they support.

It's nice of us
To the Editor:

A tax surcharge to help cover the costs of hurricanes Harvey and Irma is a decent and fiscally smart idea, seemingly.

Response to Gaulke letter
To the Editor:

In reference to Mr. Gaulke's response to my editorial, if he and the Town of Lac du Flambeau would like a reply from me, I am willing to offer up the following:

The Town of Lac du Flambeau does not own/nor manage, the water treatment lagoon near Moss Lake.

'Political mischief'
To the Editor:

Political mischief is afoot in Wisconsin, especially in the person of state senator Tom Tiffany. Nicknamed Toxic Tom, Tiffany's raked in over a million dollars, 70 percent from out-of-state donors (wisdc.org). Yup.

Baffled in Boulder
To the Editor:

This past Tuesday (Sept. 12) I was privileged to be a part of the Boulder Junction Electors meeting which addressed two important issues in our town.

Exercise equipment in parks
To the Editor:

I just received the latest issue of AARP and in it they had an article on exercise equipment in parks.

Hold your ground
To the Editor:

We are again faced with Tiffany attempting to dig up the state for profit and greed. Remember that our biggest assignment is to protect the earth not exploit it. When do we learn to draw the line?

Friday, September 15, 2017

Reader responds to Moss Lake issue
To the Editor:

I read with considerable interest the problems the people on Moss Lake are having. I can pretty much assure the people on the lake that they will receive lip service and not much else.

To the Editor:

My name is Shellie Holmes; I am the executive director of Tri-County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

What the heck is sulfide mining ...and why is Tiffany's new mining law bad for northern Wisconsin?
To the Editor:

A few weeks ago I shared a letter that I had sent to Senator Tiffany pleading for him to not introduce his proposed legislation repealing the 20-year-old moratorium on industrial (sulfide) acid mining.

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

LdF chairman responds to letter
To the Editor:

Regarding the recent letter to the editor by Jane M. Allen with her concerns over the leakage of the sewage treatment lagoons. The town of Lac du Flambeau does not own nor do we operate the water and sewer systems or have control of the operation.
