Letter writers hear what they want to hear

To the Editor:

If Mr. Kocovsky and Mr. Laadt were secure in their ideology, they would argue issues and leave personal condescension out of the discussion.

Representatives of the modern secular humanists/progressives/socialists position tout tolerance, love, and respect while they attack, intimidate and bully. They respect or tolerate only those who share their opinion.

Like the protestors at the State Capitol, many members of the left show hate and disrespect for the values of their neighbors and for facts. Credibility is weakened by anyone who resorts to bullying and intimidation to enforce an ideology.

Newspapers would be wise to set standards that would spare the deprecators and the “demonizers” from the embarrassment that results from their demonstrated lack of respect for civility.

Personal assaults against citizens who write letters to the editor are enjoyable only for the humorous intellectual acrobatics performed by those who prefer to intimidate rather than influence.

As George Orwell is credited with saying, “The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.”

Mr. Kocovsky and Mr. Laadt would be prudent to consider the truth of this statement. Both seem to “hear” what they wish regardless of what is expressed or what is factual.

Mr. Meinert,

What's obvious & simple to see is that you have zero recollection of history world or U.S.

Once more you are both wrong and inflammatory and back up your chatter with absolutely "0" facts and/or examples.

Sorry Mr. White, the future will prove you so very wrong when we tumble into the European Socialist mess but following exactly their examples.....obviously simple to see.

I follow the comments sections of these articles quite regularly so I remember the comments Ms. Schroeder is talking about. All I can say is she needs to "lighten up." She would seem to be the one who is not very "secure in her ideology." Ms. Schroeder also spoke about the happenings at the State Capitol in Febuary of 2011. Were you there Ms. Schroeder? Of course there were idiots, and they got their fair share of play on Fox News Channel. FOX also found palm trees in Madison, WI of all places! Large crowds and demonstrations attract "career protestors" and these are the persons you saw most on the news. The overwhelming majority of persons I saw were there fighting for something they thought was right. They were your neighbors and very few of them showed any hate or disrespect, as you say. In addition, many were Conservatives and Republicans. You seem to think they were all Secular Humanists/Progressives/Socialists. I like how you lump them together with a slash as if they are all one in the same. I was there for a week, performing law enforcement duties, and only three people were cited. One of them was a Tea Party Member.

Finally, I would like to ask Gary to define what is a "taker" and what is a "producer."

Mr. Meinart . . . The President has been called a Socialist (yet any true Socialist would laugh at that charge) and a Communist. I and my fellow Obama Supporters have been called "takers" by many, including you.

People on your side of the debate have been charging, ad infinitum, that the President is not a US citizen was born in Kenya, is a Muslim, and wants to establish Sharia law in the US.

You had leaders of the GOP in Congress who said their sole goal was to make sure the President served only one term.

And you say that it's Obama that has caused the division in this country.

Mr. Meinert, Once again you have made my point & it's not a matter of pride, nor should it be just the truth! Your assumption that 47%, the takers as you call them, put "us"(democrats) in office, ignores the fact that some of us "producers" are actually trying to heal the damage done by your "dividers". The ole divisive 'southern strategy' is no more. Had to be some others that put Romney and the rest of the republican side show out to pasture just sayin'. C'mon man!

Mr. White: There are two sides to every issue. I have mine and you have yours. If you didn't see the divisions which Obama created you haven't paid attention. There are Democrats in office who criticized the tactics in a "blind" letter to the oval office. You are absolutely correct in saying we lost the last two elections and we will continue to lose more as long as those who "use" the increasing handouts from the federal government continue to vote for those goodies. The numbers speak for themselves! We disagree and I am proud of it, being a producer all my life and have experienced first hand the damage of growing entitlements. Thank you for wishing me "Happy Holidays". I will wish you "Merry Christmas". Gary

The only wedge created, Mr. Meinert, is the one you and your body politic have constructed. Hope you are proud of YOUR demonizing of this administration and anyone else that doesn't subscribe to your way of thinking.

Real tiring hearing the same old 2 headed coin argument. Once again, more sour grapes and it's painfully obvious to me and I suspect many others, that nothing would have you consider fact and truth. Truth is you lost these last 2 elections and you are about to lose more. Fact is you probably lost something under the previous administration, but are unwilling to recognize and admit it. Sad indeed.

Happy Holidays!

Amen Karen: I've never in my 7 decades seen such a divide among people. We, as a people, over the last four years have had a wedge put between groups such as Hispanic, African American, Single Women and The Elderly. The present regime seemed to think that was the only way to get votes is to promote demonizing between groups in our society. When they are called on that issue, however, they cry racism. I fear the damage has been done and has sunk to such depths that our once great country is on a downward spiral which will never cease.

Mr. Kocovsky and I are accused by Ms. Schroeder of bullying, intimidation, and condescension. We have supposedly launched personal attacks on unsuspecting citizen letter writers and refuse to recognize whatever it is that she believes to be the "truth."

Now, of course Mr. Kocovsky can (and I imagine will) speak for himself. But for me, I would simply remind Ms. Schroeder that my original comment had to do with a mild correction of fact: that she had confused the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution concerning the phrase "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." I also briefly stated -- and respectfully so -- my opinion that the founders were not necessarily the stalwarts of democratic enlightenmnet that we all learned in grade school. There was nothing in either this comment or my follow-up that could remotely be called initimidating. Certainly these were not personal attacks.

Ms. Schroeder, if you do choose to be a participant [in this forum], then I would strongly urge you to adopt a less shrill mode of expression.
