Conservatives don't have time to chant, march and occupy

To the Editor:

It seems liberals and progressives are made to crusade. They see terrible problems all around that need their urgent attention, but real problems don’t seem to be enough.

They also tend to set up strawmen to crusade against, i.e., Republicans want to eliminate Social Security and Medicare and want old people to die (or at least eat dog food), and want to prevent women from getting contraception. Then there’s always American imperialism and “the rich.”

Their solutions are to regulate and control everything from the size of soda cans to the world’s climate. To get there they occupy, chant, march and shout slogans from rotundas.

Conservatives, by contrast, are, well, conservative. They tend to accept, or ignore, the world as it is, go to work, raise their kids, and enjoy what the world offers. If there are community problems they volunteer and/or contribute to private organizations that actually fix the problems. They deal in facts and judge the actions taken by results, not intentions.

They can’t bring themselves to occupy (they have jobs and families to tend to), march or chant meaningless slogans. They strongly believe that conservative values are the strength of this country and will sustain it long after the chanting, marching and occupying.
