To the Editor:
In 2001, I designed and supervised construction of the Old Highway O bridge structure that crosses over the North and South Turtle Lakes in the Town of Winchester.
The water flow through this structure is very high and for most of the winter there is open water north of the bridge, south of the bridge, and under the bridge.
For the last two years one particular snowmobiler at high speed has approached this bridge and passed under it, transgressing more than 150 feet of open water and leaving a very attractive set of tracks for others to follow.
One can go out there and see his tracks.
There is absolutely no question that this is an irresponsible act, which can only lead to this person’s demise or the demise of another innocent person following his snowmobile tracks at night.
I urge both the Wisconsin DNR and the Town of Winchester immediately consider a physical fence blockade on both sides of this structure in the winter months along with proper ordinances which would make this latest fad a criminal offense.
I am writing this letter now before a fatality occurs at this location. This is something that needs to be addressed immediately. Hopefully the responsible person will come to his senses before it is too late.
