To the Editor:
Our lakes in the northwoods need your help. The Wisconsin DNR is once again proposing a change in its regulations to allow for motor trolling statewide, a practice currently prohibited in 17 counties including Vilas.
WDNR data establishes that musky lakes in counties where motor trolling is allowed have twice the incidence of Eurasion Water Milfoil (EWM) compared to lakes where such a practice is prohibited. Those who motor troll tend to fish near and over weed beds and frequently move from one lake to another increasing the risk of introducing EWM to new bodies of water.
In addition, allowing motor trolling will undoubtedly increase boat traffic on smaller lakes throughout Vilas County, causing increased water turbulence effecting both water quality and habitat in addition to increasing pressure on musky and other game fish populations county wide.
In 2013, voters at the Wisconsin Conservation Congress in the 17 counties where the WDNR wants to allow motor trolling rejected the proposal by a vote of 2 to 1. Vilas County rejected the proposal by a vote of 146-46.
Please plan on attending the Wisconsin Conservation Congress public hearing for Vilas County scheduled for April 14, at 7 p.m. in the St. Germain Elementary School gymnasium, 8224 HWY 70 West, St. Germain, to cast your “No” vote. (Public hearing locations in other counties can be found on the WDNR website)
Our lakes (and fish) are counting on your support.
