'The fragmented system of control'
To the Editor:

Valentine's Day, 2018. Along with the usual exchange of cards, candy, and flowers comes another event of increasing frequency in American life: a mass murder, this time at a high school in Florida.

Reader weighs in on climate change
To the Editor:

I recently attended a showing of a documentary that explained the Unites States military's concern about the challenges that climate change will present to national security.

Gun-free zones
To the Editor:

Obviously, gun-free zones for schools do not work. Do something you say? Take a couple veterans or LEOs (law enforcement officers) and station them in the schools.

'The right people for the job'
To the Editor:

Having attended the Feb. 6 LUHS board meeting I feel compelled to respond to GD Holcombe's letter to the editor regarding the administrative structure at LUHS.

'Be wary of national deficit and debt'
To the Editor:

In interest of full disclosure I admit that I am a liberal politically. My current take on our national budget has taken a huge turn toward conservativism.

Our FBI agents deserve medals - not Senator Ron Johnson's partisan mudslinging
To the Editor:

Last month Senator Johnson levied alarmist charges pointing to "corruption of the highest levels of the FBI" mandating inquiry by a new special counsel apart from Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation of Russian interference in our last election.

'A pill for everything'
To the Editor:

So sad to read about how horrible the opioid crisis is. I realize this is not a drug like opioid but just watch your television for a afternoon.

Reviving the two-headed LUHS administrative monster
To the Editor:

I see from the newspaper ("LUHS admin guidelines may face changes ...," Feb. 6) that some LUHS school board members are having second thoughts about having slayed the two-headed monster that used to run the high school - that is, both a superintendent and a principal.

'Someone please explain'
To the Editor:

I was so hoping someone would of answered my questions about the "Lakeland Airport."

See film on warming winters/solutions
To the Editor:

Winter used to be my favorite season. I have many fond memories of sledding, snowboarding, snow forts, and snowball fights. Unfortunately, winters are warming and no longer reliable enough to be my favorite season. Greenhouse gas pollution is the main cause.

Reader responds to latest Meinert column
To the Editor:

Hello Gary,

I have never in my life taken out the time to address/reply to an article or whatever nature of social media until I read your article this week (published Feb. 2) in The Lakeland Times.

Support for Burns
To the Editor:

For far too long we have had a Wisconsin Supreme Court that has allowed the erosion of the basic principles of democracy.

Tuesday, February 13, 2018

Support for Screnock
To the Editor:

Did you know that there is a state-wide Spring Primary vote for the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday, Feb. 20? If you were unaware of this vote, you are not alone.

Reader responds to Gee letter
To the Editor:

Mr. Gee,

Please remove your blinders.

My letter mentioned the local town, county, state and school boards, not just Woodruff.

Tuesday, February 13, 2018

Political power
To the Editor:

I read the local papers here and elsewhere. Locally, committees and various boards of people have procedures, rules and laws they are supposed to follow.

Opposite position
It's always a pleasure to be on the opposite side of any environmental position taken by your newspapers. Your editorial board has been on the wrong side of most environmental issues over the past few decades.

Response to Zoch letter
I am writing in response to the letter by George Zoch on Feb. 2, 2018.

First item I would like to point out is while Three Lakes, St. Germain, Eagle River, and Land O' Lakes have all purchased used aerials, there is one basic difference between their situation and ours.

'Preserve our natural treasures'
To the Editor:

Attention hunters, fishermen and conservationists: our state wetlands are under attack.

Tammy Baldwin did not
To the Editor:

Read the fine print. Tammy Baldwin did not vote to increase your taxes.

Before we ever had a chance to vote for her, Tammy allowed her personal life to read like an open book. That took courage.

Police "abuse"
To the Editor:

For the last few days news casts on television, newspapers and social media have been chastising the Miami school district and local police for removing a seven-year old student from school in handcuffs after punching his teacher, pulling her hair and knocking her to the floor.

Friday, February 2, 2018

The other side of the story
To the Editor:

I am writing in response to letter by Victor Gee in the Jan. 26, 2018 Lakeland Times.

Friday, February 2, 2018

'Great again'
To the Editor:

As the nation, the constitution and the extremely successful adminstration were all founded on God, the U.S. is pleasantly reminded every day of the welcomed blessings of all Trump's kept promises.

Friday, February 2, 2018

Reader weighs in on mining
To the Editor:

I remember back in the early 1980s when Exxon was proposing a mine southwest of Crandon near Mole Lake and there was a huge promotional campaign going on.

To the Editor:

On May 6, 2015 the Senior Center in Woodruff burned down.

Numerous meetings regarding a new facility have been held.

Sorensen responds
To the Editor:

Now that I have received the slings and arrows of three editorials, with I'm sure more to come, of the RiverNews/Lakeland Times, let me respond.

Friday, January 26, 2018

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the letter from Virginia Hindman in the Jan. 19, 2018 issue of The Lakeland Times.

A wall
To the Editor:

A wall around Mexico. OK but build one around Oprah too.

PS- The Clintons too.

'Chivalry is alive'
To the Editor:

As we drove home (recently) in blinding snow, our car slid into a drift. We were stuck! A few vehicles passed us by after I activated the "flashers."

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

Reader questions Boulder Junction's budgeting
To the Editor:

I read with interest the letters to the editor both criticizing and defending Richard Moore's articles and the question of whether they are thinly disguised opinion pieces.

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

Mercer blood drive
To the Editor:

The Community Blood Drive sponsored by the Mercer Lioness Club was held Tuesday, Jan. 9. There were 22 registered donors.

Friday, January 19, 2018

Deer hides help special needs campers
To the Editor:

The 2017 hunting season marked the 24th year of the Lions' Deer Hides Project for the Lions' Camp. The monies collected from the sale of the deer hides are needed to offset the cost of sending children with special needs to the Lions' Camp at Rosholt.

Friday, January 19, 2018

Sanitation and immigration
To the Editor:

When Mr. Trump used expletive phraseology to depict certain nations as challenged in the art of sanitation, he again armed his enemies with yet another fallacy.

'Stand up'
To the Editor:

Someone has to stand up and start running against our local town, county, state and school boards. Way too many good old gals and boys who have been in office way too long!

Friday, January 19, 2018

President Trump's secret plan - and the MSM is silent
To the Editor:

Most normal people, except the MSM and Democrats, know or realize that President Trump plays the MSM and the Democrats. Right from the beginning, just look at all the free press they gave him during his campaign.

'Someone please explain'
To the Editor:

Please could someone explain this?

My first concern when I read the article about the "Lakeland Airport" was why did they need a "courtesy car"? For what? For who?

'Famous for his lies'
To the Editor:

Isn't it disheartening that our nation's children and grandchildren learn that George Washington, our very first president, was famous for his honesty and they now learn that Donald Trump, our 45th president, is famous for his lies?

Losing environmental protections
To the Editor:

The raid on the waters of Wisconsin under Governor Walker and Republican legislators continues.

A recently proposed bill would allow approximately one million acres of wetlands regulated by Wisconsin law to be developed without a permit.

Friday, January 12, 2018

Wisconsin wetland protection is under discussion
To the Editor:

Currently, the state legislature is discussing two bills, AB457 and SB600, both of which would remove restrictions on wetland protection in Wisconsin. These bills would exempt nonfederal wetlands from permitting requirements.

Childhood poverty in Wisconsin
To the Editor:

Senator Orrin Hatch had this to say in December about the Children's Health Insurance Program (which he helped to create): "The reason CHIP's having trouble is that we don't have money anymore."

Friday, January 12, 2018

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Lakeland Sharing Foundation Board of Directors, we would like to take the time to thank all of the individuals, businesses, churches, service organizations, banks and schools that donated their time, talents and money that enabled us to make our 2017 Christmas Distribution a huge success.
