The Lakeland area Special Olympic basketball season is heading into its final stretch. Both Lakeland area teams, the Lakers and the Ponds, have been practicing and competing for the past two months.
The teams road-tripped to Stevens Point High School to play against other north-central Wisconsin Special Olympic teams Saturday, Jan. 25, and Saturday, Feb. 1.
Those tournaments helped seed teams for the district tournament, which was held Sunday, Feb. 16, at UW-Stout, in Menomonie.
Both teams came out of Stevens Point invitational play with identical 2-2 records. At the district tournament, the Ponds lost both of their games, ending their season, while the Lakers won both of their games, qualifying them for the sectional, to be held Sunday, March 16, at UW-Stevens Point.
If the Lakers can win both sectional games, they will qualify for the state tournament, held in Oshkosh Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5.
Lakeland Area Special Olympics will also begin its swimming program Tuesday, March 4.
