The Northwoods Land Trust will be hosting a free guided snowshoe hike and bonfire Saturday, March 22, 5 p.m., at the Dugan Squash Lake Nature Preserve. The public is invited to help celebrate the beginning of spring at this beautiful property.
According to conservation specialist Trisha Moore, the event will include snowshoeing across a small bay on Squash Lake to the esker peninsula where participants will enjoy a bonfire with food and drinks provided.
Moore said that interested participants should meet at 5 p.m. at the entrance sign for the Squash Lake Nature Preserve. To get there take Highway 8 west of Rhinelander about six miles from the intersection with Highway 47, then turn east on Squash Lake Road and go about one mile to the Preserve sign. Parking is along Squash Lake Road.
Moore stated that the snowshoe hike is open to all ages and is a family-friendly event. The hike distance will be about a half mile. Participants should come prepared with appropriate clothing, snowshoes, and any personal hiking supplies such as water or a camera.
The Northwoods Land Trust will provide supplies for the bonfire free of charge. Please RSVP to the Northwoods Land Trust office at 715-479-2490 by Thursday, March 20, so the land trust can plan for food and beverages.
