Seven area Special Olympics athletes qualified for the State Summer Games held in Stevens Point on June 6 and 7. Combined they earned one gold, two silvers and two bronze medals in either individual or relay events
They qualified during district competition held April 19 in Oshkosh.
In individual events, Jake Hanson won a gold medal for taking first place in his division in the 25-meter freestyle. Charlie Bohmert received a silver medal for taking second in the 100-meter freestyle and Michelle Gauger finished third in her division in the 25-meter freestyle earning a bronze medal.
David Strid finished fifth and Joey Jurries finished seventh in their 25-meter freestyle races.
Two relay teams competed at state. The 4x25-meter team of Jake Hansen, Marisa Molinaro, Joey Jurries and Missy Baldwin won a bronze in their division. The team of David Strid, Marisa Molinaro, Missy Baldwin and Charlie Bohmert took a silver in the 4x50-meter freestyle.
Other athletes in the Lakeland Area Special Olympics program who competed this season are Erin Davis, Jonathon Erickson, Bee Young and Missy Young.
“The athletes work very hard at twice a week practices which began in March and continued up to the State Summer Games,” coach Brian Baldwin said. “Many thanks to Special Olympics swimming coach Gami Miller and life guard Jennifer Varsik for their dedication to the program.”
