MEDFORD - After a successful indoor season, Lakeland Union High School finally get outside on the track, traveling to the Medford Early Bird Invitational on Thursday evening.

With the addition of the outdoor elements and distances changing from indoor to outdoor, the Thunderbirds went into the meet just looking to see what they had to offer.

On the boys' side, Lakeland took home first place with 182 points, while the girls' team took second with 122 points.

"We kind of went into the meet trying to see what some people could do," LUHS head coach Kevin FitzPatrick said. "Outdoor is a whole different animal than indoors. So we just basically put together a lineup based upon the parameters that they gave us, which is three varsity and three JV. So we tried to get as many kids as we could into the meet and try and feel out where some people are at on our team. Overall it was a good meet."

Boys

Brandt Beukema continued his strong season in the hurdles, competing in the 110 meter hurdles and the 300 hurdles.

He managed to win both events with the best times of his career, including a 15.80 in the 110, which was nearly three seconds faster than the second place finisher, Dakota Craig of Ashland.

Beukema also won the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.57, which was nearly a full second faster than his next closest opponent.

He was also a member of the 4x200 meter relay that placed second for the T-Birds.

"With Brandt, obviously we wanted to get him on the longer hurdles and see where he was at," FitzPatrick said. "He had a huge PR (personal record) in the 110, so he's off to a great start there. He had a huge PR in the 300 too, so he's really hurdling well."

Kav FitzPatrick won the 400 meters, while placing third in a competitive 3,200 meter race to Ashland brothers Walker and Maury Miller.

The 4x800 relay teams continue to be some of the fastest in the state in boys and girls.

The boys' team of Darius Diver, Noah Bodewes, Jack Garcia and Kieran Mullen won with a time of 8:34.02.

Josh Irmick won the discus with a throw of 119-feet-8, while placing second in the shot put with a throw of 42-04. Freshman Zach Rice also placed third in the discus with a heave of 110 feet.

Jake Rexroade won the high jump with a leap of 5-feet-8.

Girls

The girls' 4x800 relay team of Aubrey Anderson, Ashley Peterson, Maddie Nelson and Lauren Schilling decimated the competition with a time of 10:09.55.

Peterson also won the 3,200 meters with a time of 12:20.72, while Schilling took third with a time of 12:34.24.

"The 4x8 team ran exceptional," FitzPatrick said. "I'm sure that's the fastest time in the state in Division 2 right now based on what I said last night."

Anderson won the 400, while placing second in the 800. Stephanie Mauzer also doubled in that event, placing third in the 400 and fourth in the 800.

Holly Jaeger won the discus with a throw of 88-feet-11, while Asucena Boyer placed second in the 300 meter hurdles.

"We could probably sit here and you could fill a whole page about what we've got going on right," FitzPatrick said. "Girls have some holes. We've got some holes on our team that we've got to fill, but overall we've got some pretty decent talent there."

Lakeland returns to the track

again tonight with an invitational at Mosinee.
