It was a tough night for the Lakeland boys' tennis team, facing the most dominant team in the Great Northern Conference Thursday night - Rhinelander. The Hodags took every flight, with the help of two forfeits, to take out the Thunderbirds 7-0 at Lakeland Union High School.
While no flights managed to come away with wins, all three singles matches went to three sets, with each Thunderbird taking the first set before falling in three.
Aaron Petersen, at No. 1 singles, took on Logan Wild of Rhinelander, last year's conference champion. Petersen started strong by taking the opening set 6-4, but it was Wild who picked up his play to take the second set 6-2 before holding off Petersen in the third 6-3 for the win.
At No. 2 singles, Vincent Yu had the strongest start for Lakeland, taking the first set with a commanding 6-2 score. But his opponent, Markus Johnson, wasn't going away. After the two scraped their way into a tiebreaker, it was Johnson who snuck through, taking the breaker 13-11 to force a third set, which Johnson dominated, winning it 6-1 for the match.
Matt Holmes also earned a first set victory for Lakeland. Playing at No. 3 singles against Russell Benoy, Holmes took the first 7-5. But Holmes couldn't keep the momentum won from the opener, dropping the second set 6-1 to Benoy, who cruised his way to a 6-2 third set.
Unlike the singles, the doubles matches were quick affair for the Hodags.
Jared Fahich and Grant Gilbert took down the top Thunderbird team of Tony Holmes and Zach Kane in straight sets. While the first was close at 7-5, the second was a straightforward 6-3 affair.
While the No. 1 doubles match was closer, the No. 2 wasn't as the Hodags only dropped two games as Jared Haub and Connor Young took our Lakeland's Josh Kakuschke and Alex Tucker 6-1, 6-1.
The Thunderbirds took on Medford on Monday night after deadline.
Lakeland takes on Antigo at 5 p.m. tonight at the Lakeland tennis courts.
