In the fifth stage of the Great Northern Conference golf schedule, the Lakeland golf team took second at the Northwood Golf Course in Rhinelander, shooting 354. Medford topped the course with 336.

Ansen Nomm led the Thunderbirds on the course, shooting an 85. Adam Lazaroff finished just behind Nomm, going 87 on the day.

Kyle Bengston finished just a stroke behind Lazaroff with 88.

Kailey Godfrey finished her round shooting a 94, while Jake Collins finished in triple digits with a 107 round.

"Northwood is a very difficult course and it played very tough," head coach Scott Howard said. "I thought our team handled not only the golf course well but we were able to grind out respectable scores even after having to take penalty strokes due to lost balls in the woods or the water."

But while the course played tough, Howard said it is part of the game.

"Learning how to make your way around tough golf courses like this definitely builds character and will help us mentally going forward," he said.

The Thunderbirds also took part in an invitational at the Merrill Public Golf Course on Saturday. Scores were not reported before deadline.

The Thunderbirds next take part in the sixth stage of GNC play at Timber Ridge tonight.

JV competes at Eagle River

On Friday, the Lakeland JV golf team took part in a GNC JV meet at the Eagle River Golf Course, hosted by Northland Pines.

Lakeland finished seventh, while Medford came away with the victory, shooting 194, with Tomahawk taking second with 200.
