Boys' hockey finds positives in tough season
There were highs as well as lows. The roller coaster effect that can grasp onto many teams couldn't let go of Lakeland's boys' hockey team this season.

Lakeland/Tomahawk completes successful first season as co-op
The Lakeland/Tomahawk girls' hockey co-op completed its first season and the result was the best season in Lakeland's history.

The Thunderbirds finished second in the Great Northern Conference, while earning wins against Chippewa Falls, Waupaca and Northland Pines - all teams they had never beaten before - and were the only team in the state to not give up more than four goals in a game. (subscriber access)

Defense helps LUHS advance in WIAA playoffs
It may have been delayed by a day due to inclement weather, but playoff basketball has arrived for the Lakeland Union High School girls' basketball team.

The Thunderbirds hosted Mosinee in a quarterfinal matchup Saturday night. It would be the third meeting between Great Northern Conference foes, and when the two teams squared off at Lakeland Union High School nearly a month prior, it was the home team that won in a rout. (subscriber access)

McClintock takes 6th at State
A successful wrestling season came to end for two Lakeland athletes. One progressed farther than the other, but it was a success all the same.

Jake McClintock and Dejay Nordrum, as sectional champions, advanced to the state meet at the Kohl Center in Madison. McClintock, despite having tough tests, ended the meet placing sixth in the state. (subscriber access)

Gymnastics takes 5th at sectionals
ANTIGO - In what ended up being their season finale, they gave it their all.

While they didn't come away with any hardware or state qualifiers, it could be considered a success for the Lakeland gymnastics team, who competed at sectionals at Antigo High School on Thursday night. One of eight teams, the Thunderbirds took fifth with 111.425 points, behind Medford with 113.65, yet ahead of Rhinelander at 108.05. (subscriber access)

T-Bird cagers bounce back against DC Everest
Lakeland Union High School needed a bounce back game after its hopes for a Great Northern Conference championship evaporated with a loss to Medford on Feb. 17.

Nordic skis well in Madison, Minnesota
After competing well at the State meet in Cable, the Lakeland Nordic Ski team was back at it, this time in Madison at the High School State Sprint Ski-Cross Championships. The event consisted of a relay competition, held on Saturday, Feb. 18, followed by the individual spring competition on Sunday, Feb. 19. (subscriber access)

Strebig, Medford shoot down Lakeland's hopes for GNC title
MEDFORD - The Great Northern Conference championship was at stake for two teams that had never won the title since the conference was formed in 2008.

Lakeland Union High School traveled to Medford on Friday night, needing a win to pull even atop the standings, while the Raiders simply needed to win to clinch the GNC crown outright. (subscriber access)

LUHS girls' hoops finish GNC undefeated
It was a good weekend to be a Lakeland girls' basketball fan. The team extended their winning streak to 15, while simultaneously finishing Great Northern Conference play undefeated by defeating Medford 72-56. Lakeland also took down Crandon 66-34 for their 15th straight victory. (subscriber access)
