The Thunderbird Track and Field Club Project “XC” is now under way. Project “XC” is an opportunity for Lakeland area youth to participate in the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Cross Country series.
Participants in Project “XC” will have an excellent opportunity to advance to the National Championships. If there are at least five Project “XC” members in an age group, they would have the opportunity to qualify as a team for the National Championships.
Practices are held from 3-4:30 p.m. on Sundays, from now until Sunday, Dec. 8, at Lakeland Union High School and at various local trails.
The cost to participate is $60 for new USA Track and Field and Thunderbird Track and Field Club members, which includes membership fees for USATF and the club, all entry fees, a T-shirt and instruction. The membership is good through December 2014. For current members, the cost is $20, which includes all entry fees and instruction.
Race distances in Project “XC” are 2,000 meters (ages eight and under), 3,000 meters (ages nine-10 and 11-12), 4,000 meters (ages 13-14) and 5,000 meters (ages 15-16 and 17-18).
Meets will include the Wisconsin USATF Association Cross Country Championships, held Nov. 10, in Kenosha (top-10 individuals/teams advance to Nationals) and the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, held Dec. 14, in San Antonio, Texas.
Parents are responsible for providing and arranging transportation and lodging for each meet.
