The Lakeland Thunderbird baseball team had no trouble with the Northland Pines Eagles on the road Tuesday. After accumulating 12 runs on 14 hits, the T-Birds secured their first Great Northern Conference victory of the 2016 season. (subscriber access)

Let's Tee Off Against Breast Cancer golf outing set for June 23
The Trout Lake Ladies League invites all lady golfers to join them in raising money for breast cancer research and supporting the Northwoods Patient Care Cancer Fund at Marshfield Clinic.

The league will host its seventh annual, four-person, 18-hole scramble Thursday, June 23 at Trout Lake Golf Course with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

All funds raised will stay in the Minocqua area. This is a fun tournament will feature lots of hole prizes, great raffles, silent auction items, lunch, mulligans, magic putts and a sandy.

T-Birds clash with Hodags in GNC game
The Lakeland Thunderbird softball team took on the Rhinelander Hodags April 26 at Pioneer Park in Rhinelander. The T-Birds fell 12-0 in the Great Northern Conference contest as they still look for their first victory of the 2016 season.

Lakeland was unable to garner a hit during the game as they struggled to catch up to Rhinelander starting pitcher Ali Schickert, who finished the game with 11 strikeouts and just two walks in her no-hitter.

LUHS golfers finish sixth in GNC opener
The Lakeland Thunderbird golf team had a tough day as they traveled to Tomahawk on April 26 to compete at the first Great Northern Conference meet of the year at Inshalla Country Club. With a combined score of 373, the T-Birds finished sixth of seven schools in the event.

"It was a tough day for us as evidenced by the scores," Lakeland head coach Scott Howard said. "We kept our heads up though, and we'll learn from it." (subscriber access)

Baseball: Mosinee beats up Lakeland 13-0
The Lakeland Thunderbird baseball team struggled in all facets on Tuesday as they hosted Mosinee. Lakeland struggled to get their bats going and made some key mistakes on defense as they fell to the Indians 13-0.

Mosinee starting pitcher Bryce Graveen ran through the Lakeland lineup as he racked up six strikeouts, while allowing only four hits in the five inning contest. Graveen, a unanimous first-team all-Great Northern Conference pitcher in 2015, is sure to find himself back on that list in 2016. (subscriber access)

Lakeland loses a heartbreaker
Things appeared to be in good shape for the Lakeland Thunderbird girls' soccer team as they went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. The Rhinelander Hodags, however, found a spark in the second half which led to two goals and the defeat of the T-Birds on Tuesday, April 26 at LUHS. (subscriber access)

New crop of T-Birds shine at Medford track invite
The Lakeland Thunderbird track and field team had the chance to showcase some of its younger athletes in the Medford Invitational on Tuesday. Though the teams didn't sit atop the team standings as per usual, many Lakeland individuals were able to prove themselves on a big stage.

"This was a varsity meet, but we wanted to give our kids the opportunity to compete at that level," head coach Kevin FitzPatrick said. "All of the kids that competed were either JV athletes or third or fourth varsity athletes. We had some kids come away with hardware and it was a good day for everyone."

Lakeland softball takes on Medford
The Lakeland Thunderbird softball team took on the Medford Raiders at home on Thursday. The T-Birds fell 12-1 in the contest.

Jenna Poupart was the starting pitcher for the T-Birds as she struck out two batters and gave up seven hits in the five-inning game.

Lakeland also traveled to Ironwood, Mich., on Friday to take on the L.L. Wright Red Devils in a nonconference game. The high-scoring contest featured a total of 48 runs, though the T-Birds fell 29-19 in the shootout.

T-Birds go 1-1 in two-game stretch
It was a tale of two games for the Lakeland Union High School baseball team late last week. The T-Birds overcame Tomahawk in a back-and- forth battle on April 21 before falling to D.C. The LUHS track and field team once again proved itself as a squad to beat when they traveled to Mosinee on Tuesday, April 19 to compete in a six-team invitational. Finishing ahead of the host school, along with Northland Pines, Adams-Friendship, Edgar and Tomahawk in the team scoring, individual T-Birds had a series of outstanding finishes as well. T-Birds fall in season opener
The LUHS girls' soccer team kicked off the 2016 season on Saturday with a pair of tournament games hosted by Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay. The T-Birds were unable to get by both Luxemburg-Casco and Marquette (MI) as they fell in tight 1-0 contests.

Originally slated to split the games between Friday and Saturday, Mother Nature had other things in mind as Friday's games were canceled because of snowfall. The games were shortened to 30-minute halves to compensate for the revised scheduling. (subscriber access)

Thirteen athletes represent Lakeland at indoor championships
A group of Lakeland track and field athletes traveled to UW-Whitewater on Saturday to compete in the 2016 W/TFA State Indoor Championships. With 13 athletes representing the T-Birds, it proved to be an excellent day for the LUHS squad.

While technically an "unofficial" state championship, the event showcases the best track and field athletes from the state of Wisconsin. Not broken up by division, Lakeland competed against athletes from the largest high schools in the state. (subscriber access)

Shawano edges Lakeland tennis 4-3 in opener
The Lakeland Union High School boys' tennis team has its first match of the 2016 season under its belts as it fell 4-3 in a nonconference match Tuesday at Shawano.

Both teams battled brutal weather conditions that included high winds, making difficult to gain any sort of rhythm for the players. Lakeland head coach Ted Dasler said the unpredictable weather conditions have made it difficult to make proper assessments of his team. (subscriber access)

T-Birds look to re-establish with new blood
The LUHS boys' tennis team will have some new faces to it come the 2016 season. After graduating its top four singles players, as well as their one and two doubles teams, the T-Birds will be looking to build themselves back up with the young roster.

T-Birds shine once again during 2015-16 season
The Lakeland Union High School has developed quite a reputation as a Nordic ski powerhouse. The 2015-16 season proved to be no different for the group as the boys' team took home its second-straight state title, while the girls had success in their own right with a third-place finish at the state meet.

Lakeland shines at T-Bird Invite
The LUHS boys' and girls' track team had another outstanding day on the track as it hosted the seven-team T-Bird Invite on April 2. The girls' team accumulated 158 points en route to victory, while the boys' were just nipped by Marathon and came in as runner ups with 174.

The girls' side was highlighted by victories in the 55-meter dash, 200 hurdles and high jump. (subscriber access)

For LUHS softball, family matters
While the Lakeland Union High School softball team has struggled in years past, it does not deter the group from marching forward and giving every ounce of effort as it moves into the 2016 season. The close-knit group values teamwork and sportsmanship all while looking to be a better softball team.

Lakeland and Tomahawk girls' hockey to combine
The 2016-17 season will have a different look for the LUHS girls' hockey team. A low turnout for the Tomahawk Hatchets last season led to a necessity to join up with the T-Birds, which has been met with open arms.

Currently made up of a majority Lakeland players, along with a lone Mercer member, the T-Birds compete against large co-op teams such as Northern Edge (Rhinelander and Antigo) and Waupaca which has members from Waupaca, Amherst, Iola-Scandinavia and Manawa. (subscriber access)

Medford downs Lakeland in softball opener
The Lakeland Union High School softball team dropped its opening game of the season, falling Tuesday night at Medford 27-1.

Hallie Kalmakoff was on the mound for the first two innings before Kallin Lenz took over pitching duties.

Lakeland's lone hit in the contest came in the fourth when Sierra Farah singled home Alex Fudala who reached base on a walk.

T-Birds advance to highest stage in 2015-16 season
The 2015-16 LUHS boys' swim team lived up to most of the lofty expectations set prior to the season. With a talented roster and experienced coaching staff led by Chris Garcia, the T-Birds had all the pieces in position to have a stellar year and they did just that.

Lakeland returned many of their top level swimmers including Evan Andrews, Jack Garcia, Jacob Hamerla, Ben Gibson and Vansh Jain and coming into the season head coach Chris Garcia knew that if the team performed well, good things would be in store. A GNC title and ultimately send LUHS representatives to state would be the ultimate goal. (subscriber access)
