Tennis gets rained out in Pacelli
While the weather started out cooperative, it changed its mind partway through the afternoon, causing the Lakeland boys' tennis team to postpone play against Pacelli, trailing 1-0. The Thunderbirds were also scheduled to take on Shawano afterwards, which was also postponed. (subscriber access)

T-Bird golf strikes again
In only their second outing of the season, the Lakeland golf team already has two wins to its name. The team added a win in Medford Saturday, taking the Black River Invite with a score of 331. The Thunderbirds narrowly edged out Medford, who shot 341 on the day. (subscriber access)

LUHS softball overcomes early Pines deficit to win 17-7
It looked like it wasn't going to be a good day for the Thunderbirds. After dropping a six run inning to Northland Pines, the Lakeland softball team had to rebound, which they did to top the Eagles 17-7 on Friday. (subscriber access)

Four LUHS athletes to join Wall of Fame
On April 29, Joe Mastalski, Brooke Robertson, Bill Dunbar, and Bob Dunbar will be inducted into the Lakeland Union High School Athletic Wall of Fame.

The induction will occur at a ceremony being held in the LUHS Fieldhouse at 1 p.m. with a reception and food/refreshments to follow in the commons at approximately 2:30 p.m. This event is open to the public.

Mercer track runs middle of the pack
It was another strong outing for the Mercer track and field team, especially for the girls, who finished second in an Indianhead Conference invite held at South Shore on Thursday with 67 points. Ironwood topped the event with 91 points.

FitzPatrick wins in Kansas
Kav FitzPatrick of Lakeland Union High School won the 2000 meter steeplechase at the 90th Kansas Relays held at the University of Kansas in Lawrence on Saturday, April 22. His time of 6:13.76 is the eighth fastest time in the nation this year and qualifies him for New Balance Outdoor Nationals to be held in Greensboro, N.C., in June.

Boys top Mosinee track invite
MOSINEE - Another meet. Another successful night. That's how the Lakeland track and field team seems to operate.

While early parts of the meet were visited by on-and-off showers, that didn't damped the quality on the track, as the boys took first with 178 points and the girls finished second with 139 Tuesday at the Mosinee Invitational. (subscriber access)

While it wasn't a win on paper, it could be considered a win in spirit for the Lakeland softball team.

National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman recently announced the Olympics would not be accommodated in next year's schedule.

The Lakeland Area Kiwanis Club is now accepting entries for the Get Your K's On run on Saturday, April 29, at the Minocqua Sports Park on Hwy 70 W at 1 p.m. The Get Your K's On Run is a heart-healthy family event raises money for the Kiwanis Autism Projects.

Lakeland Area Special Olympics wraps up basketball season
The Lakeland Area Special Olympics' basketball team, the Lakers, completed another successful season by finishing in third-place in division six during sectional competition at UW-Stevens Point. The Lakers dropped their first game to the Oshkosh Predators then came back to defeat the Dream Team from Wausau in overtime.

Baseball can't find consistency in tough weekend
The T-Birds baseball team came closest to winning over the weekend in their second game on Saturday, at a triangular event in Kaukauna.
