Regional champs!
COLBY - The Lakeland Thunderbird track and field team has for their first time in its storied history taken both the boys' and girls' regional title in the same year. On Monday, May 23 the T-Birds made the trek to Colby High School and came home with some new hardware to add to the trophy case.

"Track and field at Lakeland is a team sport and it requires everybody's effort to do what we did," Lakeland head coach Kevin FitzPatrick said.

T-Birds tennis battles at subsectional
APPLETON - The Lakeland Thunderbird boys' tennis team came into the 2016 season knowing an uphill battle was to ensue. Despite a group of young, inexperienced players, the T-Birds fought throughout the season and the subsectional meet, hosted by Xavier at the Fox Cites Racquet Club, was a telling sign of just of the team's progress. T-Bird golf season ends in soggy Ashland
ASHLAND - The Lakeland Thunderbird golf team made the best of what turned into a near unplayable situation. Rain fell heavily and steadily for much of the T-Bird players' front nine's during the WIAA division 2 regional meet at Chequamegon Bay in Ashland and resulted in very difficult scoring conditions.

Lakeland soccer falls to Kingsford 1-2
Despite a strong defensive effort, a late goal was too much for the Lakeland Union High School girls' soccer team to overcome as it fell to Kingsford, Mich., 1-2 Tuesday in Minocqua.

"It was an impressive game from both teams," Lakeland head coach Stephanie Wolf said. "Kingsford came out, we bodied up and were prepared to win every single ball. We caught on and began to match their aggressive play but it took us a little bit to get going." (subscriber access)

White Deer Triathlon attracts nearly 270 particpants
BOULDER JUNCTION - The Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce's second annual White Deer Triathlon was a phenomenal success over the weekend, attracting 269 racers and more than 200 spectators to Boulder Junction.

This event feature 127 male and 142 female participants from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. The median age was 45 with the oldest participant at 72 and the youngest 15.

Lakeland trap team competes in Boulder Junction
The Lakeland Thunderbird trap shooting team competed in the 2016 NWCTC North Division Shootout Saturday, May 21 at the Boulder Junction Shooting Range.

Highlights from the event included Madison Jakubek winning the junior varsity division, Chase Cantor finishing sixth and Sam Pagels placing 19th.

Michael Schrom finished fifth place in the varsity division with Kyle Wuestenhagen placing sixth and Jacob Pagels 16th. Andrea Kohl finished in seventh in the girls' varsity division.

Book closed on 2016 T-Bird softball
The Lakeland Thunderbird softball season has come to a close following a 3-19 loss in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 regional softball playoffs Tuesday at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High in Galesville.

The T-Birds struggled during their season, finishing the year with a 3-17 overall record but made some significant strides forward throughout their 2016 campaign.

Lakeland will look to expand upon their win total for the 2017 season as head coach Dean Parris will head into his 11th year leading the Thunderbirds.

Lakeland girls' basketball team to hold camps throughout the summer
Lakeland Union High girls' varsity basketball head coach Melissa Ouimette is offering three separate opportunities during the summer.

Focusing on skill development, the first option of the summer will run six sessions on June 6, 14, 20, 21, 29 and 30. These six sessions will focus on skill development and small group scrimmage at all levels and will be lead by Ouimette and other high school staff and coaches.

The Lakeland Thunderbird golf team has come on very strong in recent weeks. That hard work manifested itself in a third-place finish at the final Great Northern Conference meet at Northwood Golf Course on Friday. The team's best finish at a GNC meet in 2016, the T-Birds vaulted from sixth to fourth in the final conference standings.

Hodags run over T-Birds
The Lakeland Thunderbird girls' soccer team was handed a bitter loss on Friday, May 20 as they made the short trek down State Highway 47 to Rhinelander High to take on the Hodags. The home team had no trouble on parents' night, downing the T-Birds 5-0.

"We began to play better in the second half and started to develop some more control with the ball, but we just weren't on our game," Lakeland head coach Stephanie Wolf said. The Lakeland Thunderbird baseball team had a tough three game stretch that included a 5-4 loss to Mosinee on Thursday, May 19 along with two dropped doubleheader games on May 20 in Merrill. The Lakeland Thunderbird softball team nabbed their third win of the 2016 season defeating the Northland Pines Eagles 15-11 Thursday at Lakeland Union High School. It was the second win of the season for the T-Birds over their Great Northern Conference rivals.

The opening chapter to Eagle River Speedway's 2016 season was just about perfect.

The fans were treated to a number of exciting races including a finish in the WISSOTA Street Stock feature that was so close both drivers made the trek to the Auto Value Victory Lane and waited for officials to decide who had won.

Manitowish Waters Solstice Festival - Call for volunteers
Manitowish Waters is gearing up for its Second Annual Solstice Festival over the third weekend in June from Friday, June 17 through Sunday, June 19. There are biking activities for all ages and skill levels, parties and picnics in Koller Park and Rest Lake Parks, and lots of live music, food, drink, and celebration. Biking activities require advance or day-of registration, but all of the celebratory gatherings are open to the public.

Lions clubs to sponsor golf outing June 4 at Plum Lake
The St. Germain Lions Club is partnering up with the Sayner Lions for a day of golf Saturday, June 4.

This 4-person scramble will take place at the Plum Lake Golf Course with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Cost is $75 per golfer and includes green fees, cart and welcome gift.

Ribeye steak sandwich or chicken sandwich dinner will follow golf. To register for the tournament contact Bruce Weber at 715-479-3499 or Dale Bruss at 715-542-2356.

All proceeds will benefit the Plum Lake Ambulance EMS.

Victory for the T-Birds
RHINELANDER - The Lakeland High School track and field team once again is the toast of the Great Northern Conference.

The Thunderbirds dominated Tuesday to sweep the boys' and girls' titles as the Great Northern Conference meet at Mike Webster Stadium in Rhinelander. It was Lakeland's seventh straight boys' GNC outdoor title. The T-Birds girls have won the conference outdoor three times in the last four years. (subscriber access)

Feeding off of the bat of shortstop Jack Melms, the Lakeland Thunderbird baseball team had no trouble taking down Great Northern Conference opponents Northland Pines on Thursday. Lakeland generated 13 hits in the huge 19-3 home victory over the Eagles.

White Deer Triathlon takes place this weekend
Final preparations are underway for the second annual White Deer Triathlon, returning to Boulder Junction in Wisconsin's scenic Northwoods on Saturday, May 21.

Interested racers can still register for this year's event by visiting the White Deer Triathlon website, www.whitedeertriathlon.com. Signing up electronically ends on Thursday, May 19; however, racers can sign up in person on Friday, May 20, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. in the Boulder Junction Community Center during the registration/orientation session.

Lakeland softball falls to Antigo
The Lakeland Thunderbird softball team has stepped up their play in recent weeks but still struggle to find the win column. The Antigo Red Robins had no problem with the T-Birds on Thursday, May 12, winning 11-0.

Hallie Kalmakoff was on the mound for the T-Birds and had success against the solid hitting Red Robin offense. The game stood at 5-0 through the fourth inning before Antigo exploded in the fifth for six runs. Kalmakoff finished the game with two strikeouts, four walks and 12 allowed hits in the contest. The Lakeland Thunderbird track and field team heads into next week's Great Northern Conference meet with a full head of steam following its second straight varsity sweep on Tuesday at the Shawano Invitational. T-Bird softball falls to GNC-leading Mosinee
Lakeland Thunderbird softball battled hard Tuesday in a home game with the Great Northern Conference-leading Mosinee. After the Indians broke the game open with a six-run second inning, the T-Birds could not crawl back, falling 2-13.

Hallie Kalmakoff was on the rubber for Lakeland and pitched the full five innings. Kalmakoff gave up 14 hits while striking out one batter and walking six. (subscriber access)

Northwoods Surgery Center presents Color Run
Aspirus partner the Northwoods Surgery Center will present the first annual Color Run at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 14 at the Minocqua Park Complex.

The $30 entry fee for the 3/5K walk/run benefits the Arbor Vitae-Woodruff and Minocqua-Hazelhurst-Lake Tomahawk elementary schools.

Eagle River Speedway to hold preseason test Friday
It may not be the summer solstice, but for those who want to play in the dirt, the unofficial start of summer takes place tonight at Eagle River Speedway.

The one-third mile dirt track opens its 42nd season of racing with a practice session. It's a night where the stock car racers will get the chance to see if all the work they did on the automobiles over the winter pays off - whether that was changing the engine, building a new roll-cage, tweaking the setup, or changing the part that should have been changed last year.

Manitowish Waters Solstice Festival the weekend of June 17-19
The Manitowish Waters Community Foundation presents the second annual Solstice Festival from June 17 to 19, 2016. The event is a bike-focused weekend for casual to serious riders. Included are a Family Fun Paved Trail Ride on Saturday, and Century (100-mile), Half-Century (50-mile) and Cranberry (29-mile) road rides on Sunday. The festival begins on Friday with a kick-off reception at Aberdeen Restaurant & Bar and a Sunset Night Ride.

A trap shooting team has been on the Lakeland Union High School's radar for some time now and finally came to fruition for the 2016 spring season.

Lakeland track sweeps Otto Bacher Invite
The Lakeland track and field team continued its strong 2016 season with wins on both the girls' and boys' side at the Otto Bacher Invitational on Friday at Merrill High School. The T-Bird boys accumulated 163.5 points while the girls came away with 94 to walk away victorious.

Lakeland baseball splits GNC games
It was a tale of two different games late last week for the Lakeland Union High School baseball team. After getting shut down at Rhinelander 9-1 Thursday, the T-Birds bounced back with an 8-2 win over Medford on Friday.

Rhinelander 9, Lakeland 1

The Thunderbirds struggled at the plate against Rhinelander sophomore Jacob DeMeyer. In DeMeyer's six innings on the mound he accumulated 11 strikeouts while giving up only one hits and five walks. Brandon Hess came in for the close in the seventh where the T-Birds were able to get a little bit of action going with a run, but it was too little, too late. (subscriber access)
