Snowshoe baseball is back with a bang. The Lake Tomahawk Snowhawks commenced their 55th season of the summertime staple Monday night. Recently named Lakeland Union High School head football coach Dan Barutha has wasted no time in acclimating himself to his new environment and bringing enthusiasm to the program. The Lakeland Black team of the Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League got a emphatic 13-5 win over Eagle River Monday at the Minocqua Park Complex. Allowing only one hit on the day, Lakeland countered with 13 hits of their own to race away with the victory. (subscriber access)

Babe Ruth Baseball: Lakeland outslugs Eagle River 17-12 in Senior League battle
There was no shortage of offense Tuesday during the Lakeland's Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League game against Eagle River at Northland Pines High School. The teams combined for 29 runs and 25 hits as Lakeland prevailed in a slugfest 17-12. (subscriber access)

LUHS football team to hold youth camps
The Lakeland Union High School football program has announced it will hold its "T-Birds of Tomorrow" youth football camp in July.

The program will conduct two camps for incoming third through eighth graders. Campers will learn the basics of every offensive and defensive position and participate in team building exercises designed to make them better players in the non-padded, non-contact camp.

Lakeland Union High girls' varsity basketball head coach Melissa Ouimette is offering two more skill development opportunities during the summer.

Minocqua shows ups and downs at Rebel Invite
The Minocqua American Legion Post 89 baseball team competed in the annual Rebel Invite hosted by Rhinelander at Hodag Park on June 17, 18 and 19. While the squad got a off so a solid beginning to the round robin style tournament, a tough two games on Saturday made for a long day for the 89ers. (subscriber access)

Lakeland graduate participates in All-Star Weekend
Though basketball season has long been finished, many players suited up to take the court one last time this past Saturday for the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Weekend. Among the players who took the trip down to the Wisconsin Dells was Lakeland's own Andrew McGill.

Lakeland goes 1-1 in two game stretch
In the Babe Ruth prep league, the Lakeland Thunderbird Black team went 1-1 in a two game stretch with a 7-10 loss to Merrill Gray on June 16 and a 12-10 victory over Rhinelander Black on June 17. The split moves the squad's record to 4-4 during the summer 2016 season. (subscriber access)

Bear Cupboard Run announces July 16 races
This year marks the 7th annual Bear Cupboard Run, Lakeland Pantry's largest yearly fundraiser. The event, featuring a half marathon, 5K run, 5K walk, and a 1.6K Cubby run, draws together families, friends, and supporters from across the community, state, and country joining as 'neighbors helping neighbors' to support a great cause. This year, funds raised will also help support hundreds of state youth served by the Wisconsin Nordic Development Group.

After three consecutive weeks of rain-outs, the races and fans came out in full force for Dirt Track Racing at Eagle River Speedway on Friday night. Whether it was the warm weather or lack of racing during the Northern Wisconsin 'monsoon' season, mechanical problems knocked some of the fastest cars out of the action.

LUHS  finds new volleyball coach in Siegel
The Lakeland Thunderbird volleyball team has found a new coach in Carley Siegel. After a lengthy search following the departure of Kerry Seyferth, Lakeland will look to rebuild under Siegel's direction.

A golf scramble is being held at Pinewood Country Club in Harshaw on Saturday, June 18 to benefit New Dawn Pregnancy Resource Center. This golf classic begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. and a 9:30 a.m shotgun start for four-person teams. The cost of the event is $75 per person.

Spirt of Marywood golf scramble to be held June 30
The first annual Spirit of Marywood Golf Scramble is set to take place Thursday, June 30 at Trout Lake Golf Club in Arbor Vitae.

The four-person scramble-style event will benefit the Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center in Arbor Vitae. The $65 entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, a gas-powered cart and range balls. The entry fee also includes one free drink ticket, an all-you-can-eat burger and brat fry following the round and the opportunity to win prizes valued at $150 or more.

The Lakeland Thunderbird girls' soccer season came to a disappointing close on Thursday, June 2 when the squad took on the Amherst Falcons in the first round of WIAA Division 3 tournament at LUHS. Despite outshooting their opponents 13-3, the T-Birds fell by a 2-1 score. (subscriber access)

Lakeland earns 53 all-conference awards
The Lakeland Thunderbird spring sports season has now come to a close but that does not mean the celebrating is complete. The T-Birds boasted 53 all-conference spots for the 2016 season with all sports including boys' golf, boys' tennis, girls' soccer, softball, baseball and track and field represented.

The LUHS track and field team accumulated the highest total of all-conference athletes. Head coach Kevin FitzPatrick was awarded the coach of the year honor while high jumper Emily Scott and thrower Logan Allen were voted field athletes of the year. (subscriber access)

The Lakeland Thunderbird baseball team fell in its regional semifinal matchup with the Tomahawk Hatchets Tuesday, May 31 at Tyler Kahle Memorial Park in Tomahawk.

The Lakeland Thunderbird girls' soccer season played the final minutes of their 2016 regular season on Thursday, May 26 with a Great Northern Conference contest with Ashland. Sectionals spell end of T-Bird run
Sectionals spelled the end for the postseason runs of both Lakeland No. 1 singles player Jack Garcia and No. 2 doubles team Vincent Yu and Jim Drewry.

The three sophomore players saw their first taste of sectional play during their young Lakeland careers and both Garcia, along with the doubles duo fell in their one and only matches of the day.

Regional champs!
COLBY - The Lakeland Thunderbird track and field team has for their first time in its storied history taken both the boys' and girls' regional title in the same year. On Monday, May 23 the T-Birds made the trek to Colby High School and came home with some new hardware to add to the trophy case.

"Track and field at Lakeland is a team sport and it requires everybody's effort to do what we did," Lakeland head coach Kevin FitzPatrick said.

APPLETON - The Lakeland Thunderbird boys' tennis team came into the 2016 season knowing an uphill battle was to ensue. Despite a group of young, inexperienced players, the T-Birds fought throughout the season and the subsectional meet, hosted by Xavier at the Fox Cites Racquet Club, was a telling sign of just of the team's progress. T-Bird golf season ends in soggy Ashland
ASHLAND - The Lakeland Thunderbird golf team made the best of what turned into a near unplayable situation. Rain fell heavily and steadily for much of the T-Bird players' front nine's during the WIAA division 2 regional meet at Chequamegon Bay in Ashland and resulted in very difficult scoring conditions.

"I'm not a player or a coach to make excuses but we got a pretty bad deal going off early in the morning," Lakeland head coach Scott Howard said. (subscriber access)
