Whether you’re a total novice interested in taking those first steps toward becoming a hunter or you have simply never pursued wild turkeys, an upcoming event might be just the place to get your feet wet.

Area conservation wardens Rich Thole (Boulder Junction), Mike Sealander (St. Germain), and Tim Ebert (Woodruff) and Northern Highlands State Forest rangers are putting on a Learn to Hunt program featuring the topic of turkeys in Boulder Junction later this month.

Learn to Hunt events pair novices with experienced hunters. No license is required and hunter education requirements are waived as hunters will be hunting under the guidance of mentors.

The program is open to all participants age 10 and older who have not previously participated in a Learn to Hunt event for turkey and who have never received an approval authorizing turkey hunting for any prior season.

The DNR waives state license, stamp and application fees for all Learn to Hunt events. All license, permits, and tags are provided and there is no cost for the program.

The Learn to Hunt turkey event will be held at the Boulder Junction Shooting Range on Nebish Lake Road Friday and Saturday, March 29-30.

On Friday, participants will receive classroom instruction and dinner from 4-8 p.m. Classroom and field instruction is a requirement of the program whether or not participants have previously passed a hunter education course. Firearm safety and information regarding Wisconsin turkeys will be featured.

Saturday, participants will be paired with a mentor and will get to hit the woods in pursuit of a turkey. There will also be a noon meal at the Boulder Junction Shooting Range.

Learn to Hunt participants must have a DNR Customer ID. Every customer is assigned a unique DNR customer number the first time they purchase a license or approval through the Automated License Issuance System.

If a participant does not yet have a DNR customer ID, they may call 1-888-936-7463 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. to obtain one.

Wisconsin’s Learn to Hunt program was started in 1998 to provide those interested in becoming involved in hunting opportunities to learn from an experienced hunter.

For more information about the upcoming Learn to Hunt turkey program, call warden Rich Thole at 715-385-3355, ext. 104, or by email at Richard.Thole@Wisconsin.gov.

Applications for the Learn to Hunt program are due by March 20.

For more on Learn to Hunt programs, including a list of upcoming events, go to the DNR website, dnr.wi.gov, and search “LTH.”
