Little St. Germain boat launch closed Sept. 25

The Little St. Germain boat launch off Tobin Lange Road will be closed for repair Wednesday, Sept. 25, all day, no exceptions.

Preliminary work will take place the afternoon of Sept. 24, with occasional ramp closures possible. Expect delays in ability to launch or take out boats on Sept. 24 and full closure of the ramp Sept. 25.

Reason for repair: Power loading is destroying this ramp. Sand and rock on the lake bottom is being propelled back by large boats powering onto trailers. This created a drop-off after the last plank and a hollowed-out area beneath the concrete ramp.

Trailer tires backed too far in will fall off the drop-off, into the hole and a damaged axle could result as a driver tries to pull a trailer out.

The Wisconsin Valley Improvement Corporation, the Department of Natural Resources and a private contractor will be adding two additional concrete panels and replacing a damaged panel.

There will be scuba divers onsite to help with connecting panels. The two additional panels will be tapered at the end to help keep trailers from hanging up.

What you can do

Large outboard owners and fishing boats can trim up to push mostly surface water back to propel a boat onto a trailer. Trimming up may look or sound strange but it helps greatly.

Large inboards and oversize boats at this ramp should try to coast on and use as little power as necessary. Power winches should be used instead of motor propulsion for that last small distance of putting the boat nose into the cradle.

Alternate launch

There is an alternate private landing at the Black Bear Lodge east of St. Germain, north of State Highway 70 East. Look for the large Black Bear sign on the south side of Hwy. 70.
