Stella Budnik continues to be enthusiastic about fishing with her grandfather. Last summer while visiting her grandparents, David and Patty Zych, in Harshaw she had the good fortune to land a 19.5-inch largemouth with her 4-foot Zebco rod.
She was just as excited to try fishing again during her August visit this year. The panfish action off the dock was constant. All fish went into the live box to be able confirm how many had been caught before they were eventually released. In the midst of the panfish action, Stella suddenly had another “big one” on with the same Zebco rod.
She did need some help from her grandfather landing it. First, it got tangled up in lily pads. Stella kept the line tight and the fish finally swam back out into open water. Then when she got it almost reeled in, the bass swam under the dock, but again finally swam back out.
The hook held and the 18-plus-inch largemouth was successfully landed.
After her mom, Christine, took a traditional dock picture, Stella had to check out the inside of the fish’s mouth. Her dad Jason sells dental equipment.
