Wardens, foresters say today's breezy, dry conditions elevate fire risks
Oneida County risk 'moderate'

Several counties today declared fire danger as high or very high in addition to suspending fire permits in some central counties as wildfire season arrives with breezy conditions.

That’s the word from DNR wildfire experts who join DNR conservation wardens in urging everyone to be aware of today’s summer-like conditions with changing winds in front of a cold front which could fuel erratic fire behavior.

“Please avoid burning and keep a close on eye on burning restrictions,” DNR wildfire prevention specialist Catherine Koele says. “Also please remain aware of the fire danger as conditions change quickly.”

Wardens ask everyone working outdoors or in the woods to remain alert to these fire risk conditions. Roughly half of the state is experiencing high to very high fire risk today. To see which counties, please visit this website:

“This April is one of the lowest on record for wildfire activity,” Koele says. “The late start to the fire season is due to the snow and rains.”

Strong southwest winds and temperatures in the 70s and 80s will be in advance of a cold front, which is expected to move across the state. That will shift the winds to the northwest.
