Under the darkness of a cold winter night, certain Northwoods creatures are prowling the forest and interacting with each other.

Don Gauger, of Woodruff, shared some interesting predator pictures that were taken by trail camera on private property in Iron County.

Gauger said the animals are attracted to the disposed carcasses of butchered deer.

“We got a lot of pictures of bobcat and we get a lot of pictures of coyote, too,” he said. “Sometimes timber wolves. But this was the first time where we got both of them (coyote and bobcat) at the same time.”

They got several pictures of the two species interacting. In one, a coyote can be seen in a submissive posture as a bobcat stands over it.

“What surprised me was the coyote staying so close and taking that position,” Gauger said.

The coyote might be feeling the hunger pangs of a long winter, Gauger indicated.

“I think they’re hungry. Their food supply is limited – including for the bobcat,” he said.

Wolves usually make appearances on the property during the winter months,  but not so far this year, Gauger added.

“That’s unusual, because we were really getting a lot of timber wolf pictures and this year, we’ve had the coyotes and the bobcats and a fisher, but we have not had one timber wolf come in,” Gauger said.

Gauger said they’ve been surveilling the action just to see what’s out there.

“We’re doing it just for fun,” he said.
