Migratory game bird hunters in Wisconsin will have seasons for duck, geese, dove, woodcock and other migratory game birds that are nearly identical to the structure seen in 2016 under a rule approved by the state Natural Resources Board at its April 12 meeting in Madison.

Learn to Hunt Turkey program slated for April
Since the Learn to Hunt program rolled out several years ago, many aspiring hunters have enrolled in classes for the species of their choice. There have been Learn to Trap classes as well as Learn to Hunt classes for bear, turkey and deer. These classes are aimed at introducing new hunters, both adults and children over 10. The classes are designed to help new hunters get the basics down and to possibly even harvest their first animal.

The Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) and its sister organization, the American Woodcock Society (AWS), are pleased to provide $119,227 to support 18 outstanding projects in Wisconsin that will enhance habitat for young forest wildlife and increase hunter access to prime hunting areas.

135,307 permits issued for 2017 spring turkey hunt - remaining permits available beginning March 20
The 2017 spring turkey permit drawing has ended and 135,307 successful applicants will receive spring wild turkey permits.

A total of 240,768 permits have been made available for the spring 2017 turkey season - remaining permits will be available through over-the-counter sales beginning March 20 with zone 1.

Minnesota, until this year, had only found CWD in their state once. That was back in 2011. They recently found their sixth deer with the disease, however, found in a special hunt in the southern part of the state where CWD was found previously. This special hunt was held over 16 days in a 371-square mile area in the southeastern part of the state. (subscriber access)

Stella Fire Department to hold predator hunt
The Town of Stella Fire Department will be holding a Predator Hunt on Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28. Registration will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Stella Town Hall and the contest will begin for each participant as soon as they register. Registration will be $10 per person with a 100 percent payback for heaviest and lightest coyote in each class. There will be two classes, Callers and Houndsman.

DNR numbers show increase in buck harvest
The buck harvest numbers in the Northern Forest Zone, according to the DNR, are up by approximately 30 percent for this year's gun deer season. These numbers have some locals scratching their heads, wondering from where those numbers could have come. Others have said their seasons were about the same as last year. Lillian Treder has great first hunting season
Lillian Treder is no stranger to hunting, although this was her first attempt at harvesting her own animals. Treder is 10-years old and has been going out into the woods with her dad, Nic, for years now. She said she started sitting in a deer stand with him about five years ago and her mom, Kristi, said she has been out scouting for turkey for even longer. (subscriber access)
