October deer hunt for hunters with disabilities provides invaluable opportunity for hunters and landowners
Wisconsin landowners are reminded of an excellent opportunity to help other hunters enjoy Wisconsin's outdoors and sponsor a deer hunt for hunters with disabilities. The deadline for sponsor applications is June 1.

Potential sponsors must have at least 60 acres of land available, and are required to allow access for at least three hunters if they are contacted. In 2016, the disabled hunt will be held Oct. 1 through 9.

A complete list of sponsors will be available on the department's disabled deer hunt webpage after the June 1 deadline. Sponsors are required to submit a list of participants online or via mail no later than Sept. 1.

To complete an online application and learn more about this hunt, visit dnr.wi.gov and search keywords "disabled deer hunt." Interested landowners without access to the online application can contact Mary Annala, DNR assistant big game ecologist, at 608-261-7588 or via email at Mary.Annala@

Fish like a girl: Rule changes provide sportsmen with more protections, a better future and improved ease of access
Gov. Walker signed a bill into law last weekend that has become known as the "Hunter harassment" law. While there was already a law in place protecting sportsmen in legal pursuit of their quarry, this law goes a bit further. It also outlaws photographing, video taping or using any other electronic means to record the legal movements and actions of hunters, anglers and trappers. Drones were also added to the list of items one may not use to harass or otherwise become involved with sportsmen. (subscriber access)

Big boat, little boat

I know the media often portrays outdoors pursuits as a redneck affair. But that's not really true. (Subscriber access)

A kid again

I’ve been thinking about when I was a kid a lot lately. Maybe some of the simple joys lost, or no longer a part of life, are the reason.

Perched on the brink of spring

The lengthening days and a higher, stronger sun make it easier to believe spring is actually going to occur, despite the relatively cold temps and formidable snow cover.

Fighting cabin fever

I’m sure many winter sports enthusiasts are enjoying this relatively forceful winter.

But I’m equally certain that many are anxious for the weather to moderate a bit – even some of the enthusiasts.

Dancing BearDancing Bear

Spring has sprung not with the suddenness of a jack-in-the-box, but in a creeping fashion, little by little. Eventually, its full power will unload. For now, note the subtle changes.

Spring fire season - it is coming

Even though we are still knee deep in snow, a couple weeks of warm weather can drop that down to nothing and again we will see our lawns and those leaves from last fall that we just didn’t quite get to. Now that we are in spring, here are some reminders to help safe reduce the threat of forest fires.

Turkey hunt kicks off this weekend

This weekend’s two-day youth hunt will kick off the Wisconsin spring turkey season. The two-day hunt will be followed, starting Wednesday, April 10, by six 7-day hunting periods that run through May 21.

DNR upland wildlife ecologist Scott Walter said hunting should be good, despite the late arrival of spring. He cites last year’s early spring as a key reason.

Trucks of a certain kind

Though I’ve enjoyed the benefit of fishing out of a permanent ice shanty a few times this winter, I’ve not had to fuss over one. Spoiled son that I am, I got to enjoy the comforts of Dad’s shack, while enjoying almost none of the work involved.

Work that requires a full-sized truck.

Turkey season starts in April

The inaugural Wisconsin turkey hunt was held in 1983. Twelve-hundred permits were issued, and hunters took home about 150 birds.

Expect Wisconsin hunters to take quite a few more than that when they hit the woods this spring. Missing from our landscape not too many years ago, the wild turkey is now pursued statewide.
