The World Musky Hunt (WMH) board of directors has announced the winners of the 36th annual World Musky Hunt held Aug. 23-25 on the Lake Tomahawk Chain.

The WMH is a catch-and-release tournament. Twenty-five legal muskies were caught this year. The WMH banquet was held in Lake Tomahawk, with more than 160 in attendance.

DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp kicked off the welcome dinner with a refreshing talk about the future direction of the DNR and her own role in improving relationships with the average sportsman. DNR Northern Regional Director John Gozdzialski was also present to talk about the future of muskies in the area.

The winning team was Norski Vikings. Team member Keith Hanson caught a  42-3⁄4-inch muskie to secure the win. Keith will receive a replica of his fish at next year’s hunt. This prize is donated by Joe Fittante Taxidermy. The other members of Team Norski Vikings were Paul Hanson and Larry Quamme.

This year’s honorary guide was Jerry Saranec. Jerry and his wife, Elaine, have been longtime members of the hunt, with Jerry being one of the original guides back in 1977.

Jerry received the annual D. Bergstrom award.

Other winners were:

• Past Hunter: Steve Janowski, 5 fish, 161 inches.

• Past Hunter Guide: Joe Junion, 122 inches.

• Winning Contestant Guide: Mike O’Brien, 42-3⁄4 inches.

• Joe Fittante Award: Mark McCumber,  48-1⁄4 inches.

• Dead Fish Award: Ray Davis.

• Sportsman Award: Ron Rickman.

• Chuck Brod Award: Jay Zahn.

• Master Caster: Adam Brico.

The WMH recognizes the Town of Lake Tomahawk and all of the merchants for making the stay most enjoyable.

Next year’s hunt will be held Aug. 22-24. Any area guides interested in participating in next year’s hunt will be welcomed.
