This will be the second annual Disabled Veterans tournament put on by Kris Hanes, a veteran himself and member of the Portage County Bass Anglers. Hanes held the inaugural tournament last year on Shawano Lake in Shawano and this year decided to move the tournament to the Northwoods. This is a team tournament with each veteran fishing with a partner.
The tournament will be held July 23 and take off from the boat landing in downtown Lake Tomahawk. Registration deadline is July 1. Each boater will be paired up with a disabled veteran and will take that person out fishing for the day. The boater entry fee is $100 with a 100 percent payback. The tournament is free to veterans and veterans do not need a boat. They will all be paired with tournament anglers at the launch ramp after the meeting. The field will be capped at 30 boats.
There will be a mandatory pre-tournament meeting at 7 a.m. and fishing will start at 8 a.m. Weigh in will commence at 4 p.m. and will be officiated by Gregg Kizewski of Super K Jigs and the Upper Midwest Bass Challenge circuit.
Raffles and food are available after the tournament and the public is welcome to attend.
The tournament has several sponsors already, including Super K Jig of St. Germain, Secret Weapon Baits of Weston, and Hawg Pour Baits. Other sponsors include Skeeter, Solar Bat and Minn Kota/Humminbird.
Entry forms are also available at The Lakeland Times and Kurt's Island Sport Shop in Minocqua and J & J Sports in Lake Tomahawk.
