Eleven ice fishing teams from around the world were on Big Eau Pleine Reservoir near Wausau for the 2013 World Ice Fishing Championship last weekend. The Russian team took the gold.
The U.S. team, which took the gold in 2010 at Rhinelander’s Boom Lake, finished fourth. Finland took second and Lithuania took third.
Following the U.S. in fourth were Ukraine, Kasakhstan, Mongolia, Poland, Estonia and Japan.
Finland’s Toni Stenberg won the individual gold medal and Sergei Bolyakhin, Russia, took the silver. The top U.S. finisher was Chad Schaub of Michigan. Schaub placed third overall.
Last year, the competition was held in Kasakhstan and the U.S. team finished in 11th place.
Anglers fished for panfish and rough fish. No game fish are allowed in the competition.
Sturgeon spearing nears finish
The Lake Winnebago sturgeon spearing season closes Sunday, Feb. 24, unless season closes early due to harvest caps being reached.
The upriver lakes spearing season, controlled by a lottery that limits the number of participants to 500, closed Feb. 12.
The season closes one day after the harvest reaches 90 percent or on the same day that the harvest reaches 100 percent of any of the harvest caps set for juvenile females, adult females or males.
The DNR controls sturgeon harvest to 5 percent of the adult population to protect the slow-maturing fish.
