The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest’s all-terrain vehicle (ATV), horse and bicycle trails will open May 22.
The trails were temporarily closed during spring break-up to avoid rutting and erosion of trails which would have occurred if the trails were open to use when the soil was saturated.
Protecting recreation trails during this time period reduces the likelihood of trail closures during the high use season to repair damaged segments.
“We appreciate all of the ATV, horse and mountain bike enthusiasts for their patience during the closure and helping to protect recreation opportunities for everyone,” Paul Strong, forest supervisor, said.
Some trails on the forest were opened earlier than May 22 due to the terrain and soil conditions.
A map of U.S. Forest Service trails and roads and their use designations may be found in the Chequamegon-Nicolet’s Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) at http://www.fs.usda.gov/cnnf.
Please note that highway legal vehicles are not allowed on trails unless specifically designated.
