Strict regulations govern deer farms, but farmers say more needs to be done
Much has been reported about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and how it affects deer. For some, eliminating deer farms seems to be the answer. However, Rick Vojtik, president of Whitetails of Wisconsin as well as the owner of a recently depopulated deer farm in Eau Claire County, believes there are some misconceptions about deer farms.

Traveling trails less traveled: When winter was winter
It would probably be a safe bet that winter is most folks' least favorite season, except possibly for snowbirds, those who vacate the north to spend winter in southern climates such as Florida and Arizona. I'm in the minority as I rate winter as my third favorite season, with spring coming in last.

CWD-positive white-tailed deer found on Iowa County farm
A white-tailed deer from a deer farm in Iowa County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD), Wisconsin State Veterinarian Dr. Paul McGraw announced last week. The National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, confirmed the test results, according to a Department of Natural Resources press release.

Annual Ride with the Champs to take place Feb. 13
For those who want to enjoy a day of wine sampling and shopping, don't miss the bus trip to Three Lakes. It will be a great way to spend the day by getting out and enjoying the Northwoods without getting on a snowmobile.

Registration will be at 7 a.m. at the Whitetail Inn on Highway 70 West in St. Germain. This will include a full buffet presented by the Whitetail Inn. Sleds will hit the trails at 8 a.m. From there, attendees will join celebrity riders at various locations throughout the trail system at 11:30, and then hit the trails again by 1:30 to be back to the Whitetail Inn by 4 p.m.

Due to poor winter weather conditions, the Cross Country Cruisers were forced to cancel the annual Cruiserfest event. In lieu of that event, however, the club will host a Valentine's Fest at the Cruiser Barn behind the Arbor Vitae fire department near Big Arbor Vitae Lake on Sunday, Feb. 14.

Wisconsin's Deer Management Assistance Program now accepting applications for 2016
Conservation-minded landowners and hunters can maximize wildlife habitat potential through Wisconsin's Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP).

DMAP promotes wildlife habitat management on properties of any size that complements land use activities like agriculture and timber management, the Department of Natural Resources said in a press release. Those interested in learning more about the program are encouraged to participate in an informational live chat Thursday, Feb. 11 at noon.

For the walleyes, bass and pike we catch from our lakes, we can thank the smaller fish they eat. For those prey fish we can thank the smaller organisms they consume (insects, animal plankton, algae).

And for all of it we can thank the sun, because that's where everything begins. Yes, the sun drives the process in our lakes that's called primary production, a fancy way to say, "making food."

Public to review remaining issues for Willow Flowage Scenic Waters master plan
The public will have an opportunity at an upcoming open house to comment on four remaining issues regarding management of the Willow Flowage Scenic Waters Area that have emerged during previous phases of updating the master plan for the property.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has sought public and partner input over the past year to develop a revised Willow Flowage Scenic Waters Area Master Plan. State rules require that all master plans approved since 1996 be reviewed every 15 years.

Mushers compete at Iron Line Sled Dog race
Iron River, Mich., was the site of the Iron Line Sled Dog Race last weekend. The weather was a bit warm for the dogs, as the mercury topped over 40 degrees. The event, now in its fourth year, featured three classes: the four-dog, six-dog, and 10-dog categories. (subscriber access)

Northern long-eared bats provide value to Wisconsin
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently introduced new protections designed to help the threatened northern long-eared bat population recover. These protections, according to the USFWS, prohibit the purposeful take of the northern long-eared bat, except in some very specific circumstances, as well as many instances of incidental take of the species.
