Several anglers have already been trying their luck on the ice. Anglers should be aware of changing ice conditions and thin ice areas.
Dean Hall/lakeland times

Several anglers have already been trying their luck on the ice. Anglers should be aware of changing ice conditions and thin ice areas.
Several anglers have been out testing the ice conditions as well as their own skill against the fish already this winter. Anglers should keep in mind that ice conditions change quickly and can vary a great deal from one area of the lake to another, and even day-to-day.

Invasive species still a concern during ice fishing season
Once the lakes freeze over and anglers hit the ice, most give little thought to aquatic invasive species. In the summer, it is top of mind, with volunteers manning the launch ramps and reminding boaters to remove weeds from trailers and boats. But in the winter, anglers seldom think about plants, thinking they are all dead through the winter months. (subscriber access)

Fish like a girl
Last year I downsized a bit and decided to chase some trout in smaller streams and rivers from time to time rather than always searching for four-plus-pound bass. I thought that was going small. Turns out I set my sights too high. (Subscriber access)

Fish like a GIRL
I suppose I am finally old enough to say that - "kids these days." As anglers we often marvel at how "easy" kids have it today in the sport of fishing. With the advent of the internet, ever-improving electronics and YouTube videos covering every bait and technique, it can easily be said that it is much easier to learn new things and to more quickly understand our fiercest competitors, the fish. traveling trails less traveled
In last week's column, I traced the evolution of Northern Wisconsin's annual November gun deer season from it humble beginnings in the late 1800s through 1970, with additional information concerning my family's deer camp. This column will attempt to tell "the rest of the story." (subscriber access)

the lake where you live
Since childhood I've been fascinated with the world under water. I followed the scuba diving show "Sea Hunt" starring Lloyd Bridges. I watched Jacques Cousteau specials. I love to snorkel; I've dreamed of owning a viewing scope made from a length of plastic pipe with a glass lens on one end. I've always wanted to scuba dive (but have yet to take the lessons). Right place, right time
While preliminary opening weekend harvest numbers were up in the Northern Forest Zone, for many hunters it still depended on being at the right place at the right time. Overall, though, most sport shops and processors said hunters they have talked to felt fairly positive about the deer populations in the Northwoods. (subscriber access)

Fish like a girl
The first gun-deer season with the new mentored hunting rules in place has come and gone. No three-year-olds killed people with a 30-06. No one reported a kid wandering in the woods alone, not knowing how to get back to the truck or hunting shack. The world did not come to an end. What did happen? (subscriber access)

traveling trails less traveled
Without a doubt, the traditional November gun deer season is the most cherished hunting season Wisconsin hunters look forward to, a feeling I've shared since the 1940s. At age six, my introduction to this annual event began in 1943 when my dad decided I was old enough to spend time in the Anderson/Jorgensen Deer Camp, an institution that he founded in Vilas County in 1938.
