One of the changes to the traditional gun deer hunt this year is the advent of e-registration. According to the Department of Natural Resources, hunters will no longer need to leave the woods in order to register their deer. It can now be done from a smartphone, via computer, or by calling the registration line. (subscriber access)

The Five Lakes Project
Editor's note: This article originally appeared in the Outdoor News and is reprinted here with the permission of its editor.

Not long after exiting the U.S. Army in 1980 and moving to Green Bay to become a UW-Green Bay student - and a Packers fan - I stumbled upon a regional article in one of the "Big Three" outdoor magazines about what they called The Five Lakes Project in Wisconsin's Vilas County.

The rites of winter
The Superior Range Shooters Club of Ironwood, Mich. opened its doors to the public for sighting in rifles Nov. 7 and 8. Superior Range, located on Black River Road, is normally closed to non-members unless accompanied by a member, but with deer season set to open, Superior Range thought it would be a great service to the local hunters to provide a range with known distances marked and skilled trainers available to assist in zeroing.

the lake where you live: Fishermen's friend
The weeds in your lake have surely died back by now as the water cools toward freezing. That doesn't mean we can't learn about them now.

New youth tag regulation
A change to group hunting laws has passed with the signing of Wisconsin Act 100 on Nov. 11. State law now prohibits the use of a junior antlerless carcass tag under the gun deer group hunting regulation. Junior antlerless carcass tags may only be filled by the youth to whom they are issued, and may not be filled by another member of the hunting party.

traveling trails less traveled: 'Twas the night before deer season
Wisconsin's outdoor enthusiasts have numerous opening days to look forward to throughout the year, but I sincerely believe there is no opening day that is more highly anticipated than our annual nine-day deer gun season, which begins tomorrow!

Decades of a changing hunt
There is no doubt that hunting has changed over the years. The population, both people and deer, is drastically different than it was "back when," and that fact is never clearer than when one is given the opportunity to sit down and talk with someone who has been hunting the same area for decades. Fish like a girl: Hunting stories
Nothing brings back memories for an outdoor enthusiast like the gun-deer hunting season in the Northwoods. It's hard to find a hunter that doesn't have at least one great hunting story from either out in the woods or at the shack. For me, spending time in the woods with family or friends is therapeutic, and a great getaway. (subscriber access)

How to take possession of a vehicle-killed animal
With the deer rut starting in the fall of the year, vehicle-deer collisions become more prevalent, according the DNR. Deer are moving quite a bit more at this time of year, and when they move, they often cross highways and other roads, to the dismay of many unsuspecting drivers in Wisconsin. (subscriber access)

Fishing Report: Dewey Catchem and How
While my Packers are doing their best imitations of my Cubs, all of a sudden stinking to high heaven, the fishing is actually not bad. Crappies and walleyes are still being caught in 20-60 feet of water using a minnow and a jig.
