Seniors Gunnar Dunbar, Hannah Sanderson, and Jenna Towers led the LUHS DECA team with their performances at the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif.
Briana Trapp and Berit Guthrie also attended.
“Though I was pleased with how student performed, no one made it to the finals,” Shawn Umland, DECA advisor said. Lakeland DECA had a bright spot during the competition. “The chapter received acknowledgment from National DECA. LUHS DECA received the honor of being a community service chapter based on its community service activities during the first part of the school year.
“Only a few chapters in the state earned this award, and I am proud of our students who are willing to serve others in need,” Umland said.
Overall, students performed well on their written work. “Students did score well on their written tests and projects. It was the role plays and the presentations that students did not fare well in. At International Competition, the student needs to really develop a rapport with the judge. Many of the judges are first-time judges, so students must show their positive energy and be as detailed as possible with the performance indicators,” Umland said.
For Dunbar, it was a great experience. “Overall, I thought I did well and expected to make finals. DECA Internationals was a wonderful experience that allowed me to expand my interpersonal communication skills through competing with the most outstanding ... from throughout the world. The trip to California was the greatest adventure in my life thus far and has given me a greater understanding of the modern business world,” Dunbar said.
Umland is so grateful to a wonderful community.
“Students and I are so fortunate to live in the Lakeland area. Students asked many individuals and organizations to assist in funding their trip, and the community responded. Experiences like this make me so proud to have taught at Lakeland for 26 years,” Umland said.
Special thanks is extended to Connie Trapp for serving as chaperone and judge. She judged the business services marketing series and assisted with coaching students during the trip.
