Howard Young Medical Center health and wellness fair Aug. 22

Howard Young Medical Center and Ministry Medical Group in Woodruff will be hosting a community health and wellness fair Thursday, Aug. 22, 4-7 p.m., inside the hospital.

The health fair will feature free health screenings provided by Howard Young Medical Center (HYMC), Ministry Medical Group, and Marshfield Clinic. Ministry Medical Group in Woodruff will be celebrating its Patient Centered Medical Home recognition, and Spirit Air 2 is hosting an open house to discuss plans for the proposed hangar.

Free clinical screenings will include non-fasting cholesterol testing, glucose screening, blood pressure checks, body mass index screenings, skin cancer screening, stress management screening, memory testing, vision screening, and cardiac risk assessments. Appointments are not necessary and the free screenings are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Cholesterol testing patients must be 18 years of age and older.

“We are really looking forward to this event because it gives us an opportunity to interact with the community and provide free health services,” nurse practitioner Amy Lavin said. “Having information about your health and well-being and the services offered locally is the most important step you can take for living a healthy and active life.”

Other features of the community Health and Wellness Fair include the presence of Marshfield Clinic’s radiation oncology team and staff from the James Beck Cancer Center to provide information on cancer services in the region. The Marshfield Clinic HMR program will also be featured. The Lakeland Food Pantry will be collecting donations and the Howard Young Medical Center Auxiliary Gift Shop will be open during the health fair.

Volunteers play a prominent role at HYMC. Staff from the Hospital Elder Life Program will be on hand, as will specially trained healthcare volunteers from HYMC’s pet therapy program. Dr. Kate Hospice Home Care and Ministry Home Health will also be available.
