January LUHS students and teachers of the month have been announced.

Joe Drewry

Nominated by Social Studies Dept.

Joe was an extremely diligent student during the fall semester in social problems. Joe’s quiet leadership amongst his peers was notable because his contributions in class were genuine and always added to the student discussion. Joe’s perspective on social issues were often unique and provided other students a counterpoint which challenged the views of his fellow classmates. Joe always took a stand on issues from his perspective, but also listened and weighed the opinions of others in the class. Joe’s willingness to challenge himself academically is notable as a senior and will serve him well in his postsecondary education.

Serene LaBarge

Nominated by Social Studies Dept.

Serene LaBarge has earned the student of the month because of her hard work, dedication, and respect. Serene has been a tremendous student thus far in Global Issues, and has showed the leadership qualities it takes to be successful. Serene has done an outstanding job when it comes to her schoolwork, and is invested in always doing better and improving. Serene is respectful, courteous, and dedicated. Her personality is also key to her success, because she is outgoing, personable, and friendly to her fellow classmates and peers. These characteristics not only represent her as a bright student, they represent her as a caring individual within Lakeland Union High School. Serene’s hard work and leadership qualities have made me enjoy the opportunity to teach her, and I know she will continue to be successful because of how driven she is.

Mr. Bill Backhaus

Nominated by Student Council

Lakeland Union High School Student Council would like to award our Teacher of the Month award to a Mr. Bill Backhaus for the month of January. After nine years working at Lakeland, Mr. Backhaus has earned the reputation as a humorous and understanding man who always had the best interest of students in mind. Often seen patrolling the hallways or posted at corners, Mr. Backhaus never ceased to bring smiles to the faces of students. At the end of December, however, Mr. Backhaus left us in chilly northern Wisconsin for Florida, where he and his wife have retired and will be enjoying the warm weather. When asked what the most rewarding part of his nine years at Lakeland has been, Mr. Backhaus warmly responded, “The students. They make the job worth it. Their smiles.” Mr. Backhaus will be missed at Lakeland.
